About This Drive

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the great natural wonders of the American West. an 80-mile canyon where the Columbia River carved through the Cascade Range, creating a landscape of towering basalt cliffs, countless waterfalls, and a unique microclimate that makes Hood River the windsurfing and wine capital of the Pacific Northwest.

This route pack follows the Historic Columbia River Highway. America's first planned scenic road, designed by Samuel Lancaster in 1913 to reveal the gorge's beauty at every turn. The road features stone viaducts, arched bridges, and viewpoints engineered to frame specific waterfalls and cliff faces.

The pack extends south with a loop around Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest peak, on US 26 and OR 35. The combination of gorge waterfalls, Hood River wine tasting, and volcanic mountain scenery creates a remarkably diverse 2-3 day driving experience. all within 90 minutes of Portland.
