Packing Checklist — Cap Corse & Corsican Mountains Drive Pack | The Stable

Corsica is France's wildest island — a granite fortress rising from the Mediterranean with roads that would be illegal to build today. The D80 coastal road around Cap Corse, the island's northern finger, is one of Europe's most spectacular unprotected coastal roads: no barriers, no run-off, just tarmac clinging to cliffs above turquoise water.

The route begins in Bastia, Corsica's gritty, atmospheric port city. From here, the D80 traces the eastern coast of Cap Corse through a string of tiny marine villages — Erbalunga, Macinaggio, Centuri — each with a harbour barely large enough for a dozen fishing boats. The road is narrow and winding, with blind corners and occasional goats, but the views are extraordinary.

At the tip of the peninsula, the road rounds the lighthouse at Tollare and begins the western descent — a section that is genuinely dramatic. The cliffs are steeper, the drops longer, and the road clings to the mountainside with an insouciance that is purely Corsican. The village of Nonza, perched on a black volcanic cliff above a grey beach, is one of the most striking sights on the island.

The interior stages are where Corsica earns its reputation among driving enthusiasts. The D84 through the Scala di Santa Regina gorge, the Col de Bavella with its granite needles, and the forest roads of the Castagniccia are all WRC-grade: narrow, technical, and utterly absorbing. This is not a route for the faint-hearted, but for those who appreciate the art of driving, Corsica is peerless.
