Beginning in the Gold Country foothills east of Stockton, the route climbs through historic mining towns and pine forests before the road narrows dramatically for the final ascent of Sonora Pass. Grades reach 26%, making it one of the steepest highways in California.
The eastern descent drops into the stunning Walker River valley along US 395, where the route turns south toward Mono Lake and the June Lake Loop before climbing again over Tioga Pass. at 9,943 feet, the highest highway pass in California. and descending through Yosemite's high country.
