Ronda Road & Andalusian White Villages
From Marbella to Ronda through the Pueblos Blancos β whitewashed hilltop villages and mountain roads under the Andalusian sun.
Ronda Road & Andalusian White Villages
The road from Marbella to Ronda is one of Spain's great driving roads β a 60-kilometre climb from the Mediterranean coast through the Serrania de Ronda mountains to one of Andalusia's most dramatic towns. The A397 rises 750 metres through a landscape of cork oaks, olive groves, and limestone gorges, with views stretching to Gibraltar and the coast of Morocco on a clear day.
Ronda itself is built on a cliff edge, split by the 120-metre-deep El Tajo gorge spanned by the Puente Nuevo β a bridge that took 42 years to build and remains one of Spain's most photographed monuments. The town is the birthplace of modern bullfighting, and the Plaza de Toros (1785) is the oldest and most beautiful bullring in Spain.
Beyond Ronda, the Pueblos Blancos β the White Villages β are scattered across the mountains like sugar cubes on a green tablecloth. Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema, Setenil de las Bodegas, and Olvera are the standouts, each perched on a hilltop or carved into a cliff face, connected by winding mountain roads that are a joy to drive. The villages are quiet, authentic, and largely untouched by mass tourism.
The route can be extended to the Ascari Race Resort near Ronda β a private circuit where you can drive your own car or rent one of theirs on a beautifully designed track set in the Andalusian hills.
This is a route best driven in spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November), when the temperatures are comfortable and the light is golden.
""Ronda is the place where you should go if you are planning to travel to Spain for a romantic trip. The whole city and its surroundings are a romantic set." β Ernest Hemingway"

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Up Smart
Andalusia's white villages are charming but can be remote. Always fill your tank before heading into the mountains, especially when leaving larger towns like Ronda. Fuel stations can be sparse and close early in smaller villages. Look for Repsol or Cepsa for reliable service.
Stay Connected
While major towns have good mobile coverage, expect patchy or non-existent signal in some mountainous areas and deep valleys within the Sierra de Grazalema. Download offline maps and essential information before you set off each day.
Book Ahead
Especially during peak season (spring/autumn) and weekends, popular restaurants and unique accommodations in the white villages fill up fast. Make reservations for dinner and secure your lodging well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Essential Apps
Google Maps (with offline maps downloaded) is invaluable for navigation. For real-time traffic and road conditions, consider downloading Waze. A Spanish-English translation app can also be very helpful in smaller, less touristy villages.
Driving Tips
The mountain roads are exhilarating but can be narrow and winding. Drive defensively, especially on blind corners. Be mindful of cyclists and occasional livestock. Enjoy the views, but keep your eyes on the road, and pull over safely to admire the scenery.
Marbella
Costa del Sol Gateway
Begin your Andalusian adventure in Marbella, a vibrant coastal city that serves as the perfect gateway to the mountains. Before heading north, take a moment to explore the charming Casco Antiguo, Marbella's old town. Wander through its labyrinthine whitewashed streets, admire the fragrant orange trees in Plaza de los Naranjos, and soak in the morning atmosphere with a traditional Spanish breakfast. This is a side of Marbella many tourists miss, offering a glimpse into authentic Andalusian life before the dramatic ascent into the Serrania de Ronda mountains. The transition from the bustling coast to the serene mountain landscape is immediate and breathtaking, setting the tone for the epic drive ahead.
Morning, 2-3 hours for breakfast and a stroll.
Coastal town. The A397 begins climbing immediately from the coast. The transition from beach to mountain is dramatic.
A397 Mountain Road
The Climb to Ronda
The A397 is more than just a road; it's a driver's dream. This 60-kilometer stretch from Marbella to Ronda is a continuous climb through the heart of the Serrania de Ronda, gaining 750 meters in elevation. You'll navigate sweeping curves and long straights, all while surrounded by ancient cork oak forests, olive groves, and dramatic limestone gorges. On a clear day, the panoramic views extend all the way to Gibraltar and the distant Rif Mountains of Morocco. The road surface is generally excellent, and outside of peak summer weekends, traffic is light, allowing for a smooth, committed drive. This is where the true spirit of Andalusian driving reveals itself.
Late morning, 1.5-2 hours of pure driving pleasure.
Mountain road with flowing curves. Good surface, moderate gradients. The rhythm is excellent β this is a road that rewards smooth, committed driving.
