Stelvio Pass & Italian Alps
48 hairpin bends, 2,757 metres of altitude, and the most legendary mountain road in Europe.
Stelvio Pass & Italian Alps
The Stelvio Pass is not merely a road — it is a statement. At 2,757 metres, it is the highest paved pass in the Eastern Alps and one of the most celebrated driving roads on Earth. The route begins in the South Tyrolean town of Merano, where Mediterranean warmth meets alpine grandeur, and climbs relentlessly through 48 numbered hairpin bends to the summit.
From the top, the panorama stretches across glaciers, the Ortler massif, and the Swiss border peaks. The descent into Bormio on the Lombardy side is equally spectacular — tighter, steeper, and carved into sheer rock faces. Between the passes, the Vinschgau Valley offers a gentler interlude of apple orchards, medieval castles, and Michelin-starred mountain cuisine.
This is a route for drivers who want to feel the road. Every gear change matters, every apex is earned, and every summit view is a reward. The Stelvio demands respect and returns it tenfold.

Stelvio Pass Summit
2,757 m — The Roof of the Eastern Alps
The ascent from Prad am Stilfserjoch is the stuff of legend. Forty-eight numbered hairpins climb through alpine meadows, past waterfalls, and into the clouds. The road narrows as altitude increases, and each switchback reveals a more dramatic view than the last. At the summit, step out and breathe the thin air — you have earned it.
Continuous hairpins, steep gradients (up to 14%), narrow in places. Requires confident mountain driving.

Beyond the famous hairpins
Yes, the Stelvio hairpins are incredible. But The Stable found so much more in the surrounding Italian Alps. The route is a masterclass in connecting great roads with great stops. The mountain rifugio lunch was a highlight.
A pilgrimage for drivers
Every car enthusiast should drive Stelvio at least once. The Stable's timing advice (early morning, weekday) meant we had the hairpins almost to ourselves. The connecting route through the Umbrail Pass was equally spectacular.
The king of mountain passes
Stelvio is the most famous pass in the world for good reason. 48 hairpins of pure driving joy. But The Stable's route adds so much more — connecting passes, hidden valleys, and mountain restaurants that make it a complete experience.
