Tuscan Hill Towns
Cypress-lined roads, Renaissance hill towns, Chianti vineyards, and the Val d'Orcia — Tuscany as it was meant to be driven.
Tuscan Hill Towns
Tuscany is not a place you rush through. It is a landscape that demands you slow down, lower the windows, and let the warm air carry the scent of cypress, rosemary, and sun-baked earth into the cabin. This route threads through the heart of Tuscany — from the medieval towers of Siena to the thermal baths of Saturnia, via some of the most photographed roads in Italy.
The Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, is the centrepiece. Here, lone cypress trees stand sentinel on rolling hills, medieval villages crown every ridge, and the light has a golden quality that has inspired painters since the Renaissance. The roads are quiet, winding, and endlessly rewarding — the kind where you stop every few kilometres just to take in the view.
Between the driving, there is Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, pecorino cheese from Pienza, bistecca alla fiorentina, and hand-rolled pici pasta. This is the Italy of dreams — and it is best experienced at the wheel.

Siena
The Medieval Rival of Florence
Begin in Siena, the city of the Palio, the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, and the black-and-white striped Duomo. Siena's medieval centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Italy's most atmospheric cities. Walk the narrow lanes, sample panforte and ricciarelli, and take an aperitivo on the Campo as the evening light turns the brickwork gold.
City driving. ZTL (restricted traffic zone) in the centre — park outside.
Chianti Classico
The Wine Road
The SR222 — the Chiantigiana — winds through the heart of Chianti Classico between Siena and Greve. This is the Black Rooster territory: rolling vineyards, stone farmhouses, and roadside enotecas offering tastings of Sangiovese. Stop at Castello di Brolio (the birthplace of Chianti Classico) and the medieval hamlet of Volpaia.
Gentle, winding country roads through vineyards. Pure pleasure driving.

Tuscany beyond the postcards
The Stable found the real Tuscany — not the tourist version. The route winds through cypress-lined roads, past medieval hill towns, and through vineyards that stretch to the horizon. The trattoria recommendations were authentic and wonderful.
A driving holiday to remember
We spent four days on this route and it was the best holiday we've ever had. The combination of incredible driving roads, world-class food, and stunning scenery is unbeatable. The Stable's accommodation picks were charming agriturismos.
La bella Italia at its best
The Tuscan roads are smooth, empty, and endlessly scenic. The Stable's rally points at the lesser-known hill towns were our favourites — no crowds, incredible views, and genuine Italian hospitality. The wine recommendations were superb.
