America's Most Spectacular Mountain Road
Going-to-the-Sun Road
Going-to-the-Sun Road is the crown jewel of America's national park roads. a 50-mile engineering marvel that crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, 6,646 feet above sea level. Carved into the sheer walls of the Garden Wall, the road clings to cliff faces with thousand-foot drop-offs, passes beneath waterfalls that cascade directly onto the pavement, and offers views of glaciers, alpine meadows, and pristine mountain lakes.
This route pack builds a 2-3 day experience around the Sun Road crossing, extending into the Flathead Valley wine country and the Blackfeet Nation lands east of the park. The combination of dramatic mountain driving, wildlife encounters (mountain goats, bighorn sheep, grizzly bears), and the serene beauty of Lake McDonald and St. Mary Lake creates an unforgettable journey.
The road is narrow and winding with vehicle size restrictions, making it ideal for sports cars and touring vehicles. The season is short. typically mid-June to mid-October. adding to the sense of occasion.
"Going-to-the-Sun Road was built to bring people face to face with the sublime. Seventy years later, it still does — every curve a revelation, every viewpoint a reminder that some things are worth the journey."

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Up Before Entering
There are no gas stations within Glacier National Park. Fill up your tank in West Glacier or St. Mary before driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The next reliable fuel is over 50 miles away depending on your direction.
No Cell Service
Expect zero cell signal for almost the entire length of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, especially between Lake McDonald and St. Mary. Download maps and any necessary information beforehand.
Book Lodging & Dining Far in Advance
In-park lodging like Lake McDonald Lodge and Many Glacier Hotel, as well as popular restaurants in Whitefish, book out 6-12 months in advance. Plan accordingly and make reservations early.
NPS App & Vehicle Reservations
Download the official NPS app for park alerts and maps. A vehicle reservation is required to enter the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor during peak season. Check the Glacier National Park website for the latest requirements.
Wildlife & Road Safety
Bears, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep are frequently on or near the road. Drive slowly, maintain a safe distance, and never feed wildlife. Be prepared for sudden stops and use pullouts to let faster traffic pass.
West Glacier & Lake McDonald
The Approach
Enter Glacier National Park from the west side and drive along Lake McDonald — the largest lake in the park, with crystal-clear water revealing a kaleidoscope of colored rocks on the bottom. Stop at Lake McDonald Lodge, a Swiss chalet-style building from 1913, for lunch on the lakeside terrace. The afternoon light on the surrounding peaks is extraordinary.
Depart by 9:00 AM to enjoy the morning light on Lake McDonald and secure parking at the lodge.
Smooth, two-lane paved road with gentle curves along the lake. Traffic can be heavy in peak season, especially near Apgar Village and Lake McDonald Lodge. Watch for cyclists.
The Sun Road Crossing
The Masterpiece
The main event. The road climbs from the valley floor through cedar forests, past Weeping Wall where waterfalls cascade onto the road, and along the Garden Wall — a narrow arête where the road is carved into sheer cliff faces. Stop at Logan Pass for the short hike to Hidden Lake Overlook, where mountain goats graze in alpine meadows with glaciers as a backdrop. The descent to St. Mary Lake on the east side is equally spectacular.
Start the ascent in the early afternoon of Day 1 to catch the golden hour on the peaks. The full crossing is best done on Day 2, starting by 8:00 AM to beat the Logan Pass crowds.
Extremely narrow and winding with steep drop-offs and no guardrails in many sections. Vehicle size restrictions apply. Expect tight switchbacks, rock-cut tunnels, and potential for wildlife on the road. Pavement is well-maintained but the driving is technical and demands full attention.

The crown jewel of American roads
Going-to-the-Sun Road is the most spectacular road I've ever driven. The Stable's route extends beyond Glacier National Park into the surrounding wilderness. The wildlife viewing tips were excellent — we saw mountain goats, bears, and eagles.
Glacier National Park is unreal
The scale of the mountains, the colour of the lakes, the drama of the road — it's almost too much to take in. The Stable's rally points were perfectly placed at the most jaw-dropping viewpoints. The roadbook's history of the road's construction was fascinating.
