Laguna Beach & Orange County Coast
Art Galleries, Hidden Coves & the Pacific Coast Highway
Laguna Beach & Orange County Coast
Laguna Beach occupies a unique position in Southern California — it is simultaneously a world-class art destination, a surf town, and one of the most scenically dramatic stretches of coastline between San Francisco and San Diego. The town's 30 coves and beaches are separated by rocky headlands and connected by a coastal path that winds past tide pools, sea caves, and the Heisler Park blufftop gardens. The Pacific Coast Highway runs through the centre of town, and the combination of ocean views, gallery-lined streets, and the constant presence of the Pacific makes this one of the most rewarding drives in Southern California.
"Laguna Beach is the anomaly of Southern California — a place that somehow resisted the sprawl, kept its coves, and built an art scene worthy of the landscape that inspired it."

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Gas stations are readily available along the Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, including Shell, Mobil, and Chevron. It is recommended to fill up your tank before exploring the more remote coves and canyons, as gas stations become less frequent outside of the main town.
Cell Coverage
Cell phone coverage is generally strong in Laguna Beach, with Verizon and AT&T offering the most reliable service. However, you may experience intermittent signal loss in some of the more secluded coves and canyons along the coast.
Advance Bookings
Many of the popular restaurants and hotels in Laguna Beach, especially those with ocean views, require reservations well in advance. This is particularly true for weekend travel and during the summer months. Be sure to book your accommodations and any fine dining experiences ahead of time.
Parking Strategy
Parking in Laguna Beach can be challenging, particularly during peak hours and weekends. Utilize the public parking structures located throughout the town and consider exploring the area on foot. Many restaurants and hotels also offer valet parking services.
Crystal Cove State Park
Historic Cottages & Tide Pools
Begin at Crystal Cove State Park, just north of Laguna Beach. The historic district preserves 46 vintage beach cottages from the 1920s-1940s — several are available as overnight accommodation. The tide pools at low tide are among the richest in California, and the offshore underwater park is a world-class dive site.
Depart by 8:30 AM for morning light on the cliffs and to find parking, which can be limited.
The drive to Crystal Cove is on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), a multi-lane highway with moderate traffic. The road is smooth asphalt with gentle curves and no significant elevation changes. The approach to the park entrance is well-marked.
Heisler Park & Main Beach
The Blufftop Walk
Drive south on PCH into Laguna Beach and park near Heisler Park — the blufftop garden that runs above the coves north of Main Beach. Walk the coastal path past Picnic Beach, Rock Pile, and Fisherman's Cove. Main Beach, with its basketball courts and volleyball nets, is the social centre of Laguna.
Arrive mid-morning to secure a parking spot and enjoy a walk before the afternoon crowds.
The drive from Crystal Cove is a straight shot south on PCH. Expect increased traffic and pedestrian activity as you enter Laguna Beach. The roads around Heisler Park are city streets with stop-and-go traffic. Parking can be challenging to find, especially on weekends.

A perfect SoCal day drive
Coast road to canyon road to hilltop lunch — this route is perfectly paced for a day out. The rally points are well-spaced and each one offers something different. Highly recommend.
Orange County's coastal jewel
Laguna Beach is beautiful but the roads behind it are even better. The Stable found canyon roads with ocean views that I didn't know existed, and I've lived here for years. The art gallery stops were a lovely touch.
