The Sierra Passes

The Sierra Nevada is the backbone of California, and this route takes you over the top of it. twice. Beginning in the Gold Country foothills east of Stockton, the route climbs through historic mining towns and pine forests before the road narrows dramatically for the final ascent of Sonora Pass. Grades reach 26%, making it one of the steepest highways in California.

The eastern descent drops into the stunning Walker River valley along US 395, where the route turns south toward Mono Lake and the June Lake Loop before climbing again over Tioga Pass. at 9,943 feet, the highest highway pass in California. and descending through Yosemite's high country.

This is a route for drivers who want to feel the scale of the Sierra. The air thins, the views expand, and the driving demands your full attention. Gold Country wineries, alpine lodges, and Yosemite's grandeur complete the experience.

"At 9,943 feet, the air is thin, the sky is close, and the road ahead is the only thing that matters."

Before You Go

Trip Planning Essentials

Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.

Fuel Stops

Fuel is available in Murphys and Sonora before ascending Sonora Pass. The next reliable fuel is in Bridgeport, over 100 miles away. Fill up in Lee Vining before climbing Tioga Pass, as there are no services in the Yosemite high country.

Cell Coverage

Expect no cell service on Sonora Pass (Highway 108) and Tioga Pass (Highway 120). Service is also spotty on US 395 between Bridgeport and Lee Vining. Download offline maps and music before you go.

Advance Bookings

Reservations are essential for The Ahwahnee Dining Room (book months ahead) and recommended for Grounds Restaurant in Murphys. Lodging in Yosemite and June Lake should be booked 6-12 months in advance for summer travel.

Pass Closures

Sonora and Tioga Passes are closed all winter, typically from November to late May or early June. Always check Caltrans road conditions (roads.dot.ca.gov) before your trip, as conditions can change rapidly.

Download Offline Maps

Before you go, download the entire route area in Google Maps or your preferred navigation app. This will be critical in the extensive no-service zones across the Sierra passes.

Sonora Pass Ascent

The Steepest Highway

Preview

The western approach to Sonora Pass is dramatic — the road narrows, grades steepen to 26%, and switchbacks tighten as you climb above the treeline to 9,624 feet. Stop at the summit for panoramic views of the Sierra crest.

Suggested Timing

Begin the ascent no later than 2:00 PM to ensure you reach the summit with good light. The climb is slow and demanding; allow at least 2 hours.

Road Character

Extremely steep and narrow two-lane road with grades up to 26%. Numerous tight switchbacks and hairpins, some with 15 mph advisories. Asphalt is generally good but can be uneven in sections. Minimal guardrails. Not recommended for RVs or trailers.

Mountain driving at its finest

The Sierra passes are some of the best driving roads in America and this route pack strings them together perfectly. The elevation changes are dramatic and the scenery is world-class. Bring a jacket — it gets cold up top!

Best driving roads in California

If you love mountain passes, this is your route. The roads are technical, the views are staggering, and the rally points are perfectly placed for photo stops and rest breaks. Absolutely brilliant curation.

Unforgettable mountain experience

We drove this over two days and stayed at the recommended lodge. The route planning was impeccable — every pass was better than the last. The GPS files saved us from several wrong turns on unmarked mountain roads.
