The Route

Tail of the Dragon & Cherohala Skyway

US Route 129 through Deals Gap. universally known as the Tail of the Dragon. is the most famous driving road in America. Its 318 curves in just 11 miles make it a pilgrimage destination for sports car and motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world. But this route pack goes beyond the Dragon itself, combining it with the equally spectacular Cherohala Skyway for a complete Smoky Mountains driving experience.

The Cherohala Skyway climbs to over 5,400 feet through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests, offering sweeping mountain vistas and long, flowing curves that reward smooth driving. Together, these two roads represent the full spectrum of driving pleasure. the Dragon's technical intensity followed by the Skyway's majestic flow.

This is a route for drivers who want to be challenged. The Dragon demands respect. its blind corners, elevation changes, and narrow lanes leave no room for error. But for those who drive it well, there is no more satisfying road in America. The surrounding Smoky Mountains provide the perfect backdrop, with Great Smoky Mountains National Park, craft distilleries, and authentic Appalachian culture rounding out the experience.

"It's not about the destination, it's about the 318 curves along the way."

Advance Bookings

Book accommodations, especially at popular spots like the Tapoco Lodge and Snowbird Mountain Lodge, well in advance. Dinner reservations are also highly recommended for the lodge restaurants, particularly on weekends.

Driving Etiquette

On the Tail of the Dragon, use the pull-offs to let faster vehicles pass. Be mindful of motorcycles and sports cars, and stay in your lane. The road demands full attention, so save the sightseeing for the designated overlooks.

318 curves of pure joy

The Dragon is legendary for a reason, but The Stable built a complete experience around it. The Cherohala Skyway section was almost as good as the Dragon itself. Rally points at the best pull-offs made it easy to stop and soak it all in.

A driver's paradise

If you love driving, you need to do this route. The roads are technical, the scenery is gorgeous, and The Stable's recommendations for timing (early morning, weekday) made all the difference. We had the Dragon almost to ourselves.
