Texas Hill Country
Barbecue, bourbon, and back roads through the heart of Texas
Texas Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country is one of America's best-kept driving secrets. Between Austin and the Guadalupe River, a network of ranch roads. FM (Farm-to-Market) roads in Texas parlance. winds through rolling limestone hills, past spring-fed rivers, and through small German-heritage towns that feel like they belong in another century.
The driving here is exceptional. Roads like FM 337 ('the Twisted Sisters'), Ranch Road 1, and FM 2325 offer the kind of flowing, technical curves that sports car enthusiasts dream about. smooth pavement, minimal traffic, and elevation changes through live oak and cedar forests. The Hill Country is also home to Texas Wine Country, with over 50 wineries clustered around Fredericksburg and the US 290 corridor.
But what truly sets this route apart is the food. The Hill Country sits at the intersection of Texas barbecue culture, German heritage, and Mexican culinary tradition. From the legendary brisket at Franklin Barbecue to the kolaches of Hruska's and the Tex-Mex of San Antonio, this is a route where the food stops are as important as the driving. Add in the live music scene of Austin and the small-town charm of Fredericksburg, and you have one of the most complete driving experiences in America.

Texas has driving roads?!
I was skeptical β Texas and twisty roads don't usually go together. But the Hill Country proved me completely wrong. The roads between Fredericksburg and the river valleys are genuinely excellent. The BBQ stops were world-class.
