Avenue of the Giants
Thirty-One Miles Through the Ancient World
Avenue of the Giants
The Avenue of the Giants is one of the most singular drives in the world — not because of its speed, its elevation, or its technical challenge, but because of what surrounds it. For 31 miles, State Route 254 threads through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, passing beneath coastal redwoods that were ancient when the Roman Empire fell and that dwarf every human structure you have ever stood beside.
This is a companion pack to our NorCal Redwoods & Lost Coast route, designed for drivers who want to give the Avenue the dedicated attention it deserves rather than experiencing it as a single day within a longer itinerary. The drive is easy — flat, well-maintained, and unhurried — but the experience is profound. You will stop often, walk quietly through groves that absorb all sound, and leave with a recalibrated sense of scale.
The route runs south to north, beginning at Founders Grove and ending at the Drury-Chaney Loop near Pepperwood. Along the way, a short detour to Rockefeller Forest — the largest remaining old-growth redwood grove on Earth — is essential. The Shrine Drive-Thru Tree in Myers Flat provides the route's one moment of levity: driving your car through a living 3,000-year-old organism is an experience that resists easy description.
Garberville, at the southern gateway, provides the best base for the drive. The Benbow Historic Inn is the finest accommodation in the region — a 1926 Tudor Revival inn that has hosted presidents and film stars and still manages to feel unhurried. For those who want to sleep inside the forest itself, Miranda Gardens Resort sits directly on the Avenue in the hamlet of Miranda.
"The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe."

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Fill up before entering the Avenue. The only reliable fuel on the Avenue itself is at Myers Flat, roughly midway through the route. Do not rely on finding fuel elsewhere along the 31-mile corridor.
Cell Coverage
Cell service is unreliable throughout the Avenue of the Giants and drops entirely in the deeper groves. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) and any music or podcasts before you leave Garberville or Fortuna.
Advance Bookings
The Benbow Historic Inn books out weeks in advance during peak season (June–September). If the Benbow is your target, book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Miranda Gardens Resort is easier to secure but also fills on summer weekends.
Best Time to Drive
May through October offers the most reliable weather. Summer mornings often begin with coastal fog that burns off by midday, creating dramatic light in the groves. Avoid holiday weekends if possible — the Avenue is a popular day trip from the Bay Area and can become congested.
Founders Grove & the Dyerville Giant
Where Giants Fell
Begin your drive at Founders Grove, the most celebrated stop on the Avenue and the spiritual heart of the Humboldt Redwoods. The grove is dedicated to the founders of the Save-the-Redwoods League, whose 1920s activism preserved this forest for the world. The flat, easy 0.8-mile loop trail leads you past the Founder's Tree — once thought to be the world's tallest — and to the Dyerville Giant, a fallen colossus that measured 362 feet before it toppled in a 1991 storm. Lying on the forest floor, it is still taller than the Statue of Liberty. Stand at its root ball, which towers 35 feet overhead, and recalibrate your sense of scale.
Arrive early — by 8:30 or 9:00 AM — to experience the grove before tour buses arrive. Morning light filters through the canopy in long golden shafts that are impossible to photograph and impossible to forget.
The Avenue of the Giants begins as a well-maintained two-lane road that peels away from Highway 101 into immediate, cathedral-like silence. The transition is abrupt and deliberate — one moment you are on a freeway, the next you are threading through trunks that were saplings when Rome fell. Speed limits drop to 25–35 mph and feel entirely appropriate.
Rockefeller Forest & Bull Creek Flats
The World's Largest Old-Growth Grove
Turn west off the Avenue onto Mattole Road for two miles to reach Rockefeller Forest — the largest remaining contiguous old-growth coastal redwood forest on Earth, covering 10,000 acres. Unlike the more visited Founders Grove, Rockefeller is quieter, darker, and more primordial. The Bull Creek Flats trail (3.5 miles, flat) winds along the creek through trees so dense that midday feels like dusk. The Tall Trees Trail within the forest leads to some of the tallest measured specimens anywhere. John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated $2 million in 1930 to help purchase this grove — one of the largest private conservation gifts of the 20th century.
Mid-morning is ideal. The forest is cool even in summer, and the creek provides a natural soundtrack. Allow at least an hour if you walk any of the trails.
Mattole Road is a narrow, winding two-lane road with occasional rough patches. It is perfectly manageable in a standard car but requires attentive driving. The two-mile detour is absolutely worth it — the forest density along this stretch exceeds anything visible from the Avenue itself.
