Oregon Coast
Sea Stacks, Lighthouses & Craft Beer
Oregon Coast
Unlike its California counterpart, the Oregon Coast is entirely public. every inch of the 363-mile shoreline is accessible to all. US 101 hugs the coast through a landscape of dramatic sea stacks, towering headlands, old-growth forests, and fishing villages where the catch comes in fresh every morning.
This route pack follows the full coast from Astoria in the north to Brookings in the south, with curated detours to the best viewpoints, hidden beaches, and the craft breweries and seafood restaurants that make this coast a culinary destination in its own right.
The driving is relaxed and scenic rather than technical. long sweeping curves along clifftops, bridges spanning river mouths, and occasional stretches where the road dips down to beach level. The pace is deliberately unhurried, with time built in for whale watching, tidepooling, and lingering over Dungeness crab at a harborside restaurant.
"The Oregon Coast belongs to everyone. Every grain of sand, every sea stack, every sunset is public property. This is not a coast to rush through — it is a coast to inhabit, one headland at a time."

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Up Frequently
Gas stations become sparse on the southern Oregon Coast. Fill up your tank in larger towns like Florence and Coos Bay, even if you're not running low, to avoid any issues in the more remote stretches.
Download Offline Maps
Cell service is unreliable and often non-existent, especially in state parks and along the southern coast. Download your maps and route for offline use before you depart.
Book Ahead
The Oregon Coast is a popular destination year-round. Book accommodations, popular restaurants, and any must-do tours (like jet boats on the Rogue River) several weeks or even months in advance, especially for summer travel.
Tide Chart App
Exploring tide pools is a quintessential Oregon Coast experience, but it's only possible at low tide. Use an app like 'Tide Charts' to plan your visits to places like Cannon Beach and Yaquina Head accordingly.
Layer Up
The weather on the coast can change in an instant, from sunny to foggy and windy. Always dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket, no matter the season.
Astoria to Cannon Beach
The North Coast
Begin in Astoria, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific. Explore the Flavel House Museum and climb the Astoria Column for 360-degree views. Drive south to Cannon Beach, one of the most photographed beaches in the world, dominated by the 235-foot Haystack Rock. Time your arrival for low tide to explore the tidepools.
Depart by 9:00 AM to enjoy the morning light and beat the crowds at Cannon Beach.
A classic coastal drive on US-101. The road is a well-maintained two-lane highway with some gentle curves and elevation changes. Expect increased traffic, especially during summer weekends and holidays. The views of the coastline are spectacular, with numerous pull-offs for photo opportunities.
Cannon Beach to Tillamook
The Cheese Trail
Continue south past Oswald West State Park — a hidden cove accessible only by foot trail through old-growth forest. Cross the dramatic Neahkahnie Mountain viewpoint, then descend to Tillamook, home of the famous Tillamook Cheese Factory. Tour the factory, sample the curds, and stock up for the road ahead.
Depart Cannon Beach in the early afternoon to allow for a stop at Oswald West State Park and to reach Tillamook before the cheese factory closes.
This section of US-101 features the dramatic Neahkahnie Mountain, with a steep climb and descent and sharp curves. The road is narrower here, and requires more attentive driving. The views from the summit are among the best on the Oregon Coast. South of the mountain, the road becomes flatter and straighter as it approaches Tillamook.

Oregon's coast road is world-class
Forget the PCH — Oregon's coast is where it's at. The roads are better, the scenery is more dramatic, and there are far fewer people. The Stable's route captures the very best of it. The craft brewery stops were a bonus.
The Pacific Northwest at its finest
Oregon's coast is wild, dramatic, and completely different from California. The Stable found hidden coves, towering sea stacks, and charming coastal towns that the guidebooks miss. The seafood recommendations were outstanding.
Rugged beauty around every corner
We drove this over three days and the variety was incredible — rainforests, sand dunes, lighthouses, and fishing villages. The rally points at the lesser-known beaches were our favourites. A truly special route.
