Benbow Inn Restaurant, Garberville
The Benbow Historic Inn was built in 1926, and the dining room has the quality of a room that has been getting better ever since. Tudor Revival architecture, river views through tall windows, an open fireplace in the cooler months, and a wine cellar that has been accumulating bottles since Prohibition ended. It is the kind of room that makes a meal feel like an occasion without requiring you to dress for one.
The Kitchen
The Benbow's kitchen works within a clear philosophy: seasonal, local, and honest about what the region produces. Humboldt County is not a food destination in the way that Napa or Sonoma is, but it has exceptional raw materials — Dungeness crab from the Pacific, grass-fed beef from nearby ranches, wild mushrooms from the surrounding forests, and produce from the inn's own gardens.
The result is a menu that changes with the seasons and feels genuinely of its place. In winter and spring, Dungeness Crab is the dish to order — the kitchen handles it simply and well, which is the right approach. In summer, the focus shifts to the garden and the grill. The soups are consistently excellent.
The Wine
The wine list is the strongest in the region. The cellar has particular depth in Anderson Valley producers — Navarro, Roederer Estate, Goldeneye — and a well-chosen selection from the broader North Coast. The sommelier is knowledgeable and not intimidating. Ask for a recommendation; they will not steer you wrong.
The Setting
The terrace patio is the best seat in the house on warm evenings — the river visible through the trees, the light fading slowly over the redwood-covered hills. In cooler months, the fireplace room is the alternative. Both are worth requesting when you book.
Practical Notes
Reservations are essential. In summer, book at least a week in advance; longer for weekend evenings. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner; lunch is not served in the main dining room (the inn's bar serves lighter fare at midday).
Parking is complimentary for inn guests. Day visitors should use the main lot off Lake Benbow Drive.
The Stable Take
The Benbow Inn Restaurant is the reason to base yourself in Garberville rather than driving through. It elevates an already exceptional drive into something that feels complete — the forest by day, the inn by night. The wine list alone justifies the detour.
