Benbow Historic Inn, Garberville

There are hotels that are convenient, and there are hotels that are the reason you chose a particular route. The Benbow Historic Inn is the latter. Built in 1926 in the Tudor Revival style, it sits on the South Fork Eel River at the southern gateway to the Avenue of the Giants, surrounded by redwoods and manicured gardens that have been tended for a century.

The History

The Benbow has hosted Charlie Chaplin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and a long list of figures who understood that the best places to stay are the ones that have been getting better for decades. The inn was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1987. The sense of occasion is genuine rather than performed.

The Rooms

The rooms are individually decorated with period antiques and modern comforts β€” no two are identical, which is part of the point. Request a river-view room if one is available; the South Fork Eel River visible through the windows in the morning, with the redwood-covered hills beyond, is a view worth paying for.

The beds are excellent. The bathrooms have been updated without losing the period character. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

The Grounds

The gardens are the Benbow's most underrated asset. Manicured lawns, rose beds, and mature trees create a setting that feels genuinely removed from the highway, despite being minutes from it. The seasonal outdoor pool is a welcome amenity after a day on the Avenue. The river is accessible from the grounds and, in summer, shallow enough for wading.

The Restaurant and Wine Cellar

The Benbow's restaurant is reviewed separately, but it is worth noting here that having the finest dining room in Southern Humboldt attached to your accommodation is a significant advantage. The wine cellar has been accumulating bottles since Prohibition ended and has particular depth in Anderson Valley producers. Breakfast is included for inn guests and is served in the main dining room.

Practical Notes

Book at least two to three weeks in advance for summer weekends; the Benbow fills quickly from June through September. Off-season rates are significantly lower and the inn is quieter and, in some ways, more atmospheric.

Complimentary self-parking for all guests in the main lot off Lake Benbow Drive.

The Stable Take

The Benbow is the kind of hotel that makes you want to slow down. After a day in the redwoods β€” where the scale of things recalibrates your sense of time β€” the Benbow's unhurried pace feels exactly right. Stay two nights if you can.
