The Big Sur Classic
Where the Mountains Meet the Pacific
The Big Sur Classic
The Big Sur segment of the Pacific Coast Highway is arguably the most iconic driving road in America. This 90-mile stretch between San Simeon and Carmel threads along sheer cliffs hundreds of feet above the Pacific, crossing the famous Bixby Creek Bridge and passing through ancient redwood groves.
The road demands attention. blind curves, elevation changes, and narrow shoulders keep drivers engaged. but the reward is a landscape that has inspired generations of artists, writers, and photographers. We have extended this route into a multi-day experience that includes the Carmel-Monterey wine region, a stop at the legendary Laguna Seca raceway, and some of the finest dining on the California coast.
This is not just a drive. It is a pilgrimage.
"The Big Sur coast is not a destination. It is a state of mind β a place where the road, the cliffs, and the ocean conspire to make you feel alive."

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Fuel is extremely limited and expensive along the 90-mile Big Sur coast. Fill up in San Simeon or Carmel before you begin. There are only a few stations in between, such as in Gorda, and prices can be double the average.
Cell Coverage
Cell service is virtually nonexistent for long stretches of Highway 1 in Big Sur. Download maps and any necessary information before you go. Don't rely on your phone for navigation or communication.
Advance Bookings
Reservations are essential for most restaurants and all accommodations in Big Sur and Carmel, especially during peak season. Book several months in advance for popular spots like Sierra Mar and Post Ranch Inn.
Driving Tip
The drive requires your full attention. Be mindful of sharp turns, narrow shoulders, and cyclists. Use the pullouts to enjoy the views and let faster traffic pass. Driving south to north generally offers better ocean views.
San Simeon to Big Sur
The Southern Approach
Begin at Hearst Castle and wind north along the most dramatic stretch of California coastline. Stop at Ragged Point for your first clifftop views, then continue through the wild southern Big Sur coast to your first overnight.
Depart by 8:30 AM for morning light on the cliffs and to allow ample time for photo stops.
Classic two-lane highway with numerous tight curves and switchbacks clinging to the cliffs. The asphalt is generally smooth, but there are sections with uneven pavement. Guardrails are present but not continuous. Expect significant elevation changes and be prepared for slow-moving traffic, especially during peak season. The views are spectacular, but require driver focus.
Nepenthe & Big Sur Village
Clifftop Dining
Settle into Big Sur with lunch at Nepenthe β the legendary clifftop restaurant with Ambrosia burgers and views that stretch to the horizon. Explore the Henry Miller Memorial Library and Big Sur Bakery before dinner.
Arrive for a late lunch around 2:00 PM to miss the peak rush and enjoy the afternoon sun on the terrace.
The approach to Nepenthe is a short, winding uphill drive from Highway 1. The road is paved but narrow in places. Parking can be competitive; follow the signs for overflow parking. The village roads are slow-paced and easily walkable.

Big Sur like you've never seen it
I've driven Highway 1 many times but this route pack revealed a completely different Big Sur. The inland detours through the mountains were incredible. Rally points were perfectly spaced for a full day of driving.
Worth every penny
The level of detail in the roadbook is remarkable. Every stop felt intentional and the dining recommendations were outstanding. We extended our trip by a day just because we didn't want it to end.

Forget Google Maps and random TripAdvisor reviews. This route pack is what happens when someone who truly loves driving curates a route. The hidden viewpoints alone were worth the price.
