The Ridge Above Silicon Valley
Bay Area Skyline
Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) runs along the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, offering a 40-mile ridge road with views of the Pacific to the west and Silicon Valley to the east. Combined with the connecting roads that drop down to the coast. Highway 84 through La Honda, Highway 9 through the redwoods, and the legendary Alice's Restaurant junction. this is one of the finest driving loops in Northern California.
The road surface is excellent, the curves are well-sighted, and the mix of open ridge sections and forested descents keeps the driving varied and engaging. On weekends, you will share the road with cyclists and fellow enthusiasts. Alice's Restaurant at the junction of Skyline and La Honda Road has been a gathering point for Bay Area car and motorcycle culture for decades.
This route pack extends the core Skyline drive into a full-day experience that includes Half Moon Bay for seafood, the Santa Cruz Mountains wine region, and the historic town of Pescadero.
"Alice's Restaurant is not just a café. It is a church — and the congregation arrives on two wheels and four."

Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.

Fuel stations are sparse along Skyline Boulevard. It is highly recommended to start with a full tank. The only gas station directly on the route is at the intersection of Skyline (CA-35) and La Honda (CA-84) in Sky Londa.
Cell Coverage
Cell service is unreliable and often non-existent in the dense redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains, particularly on La Honda Road and parts of Highway 9. Download offline maps and route information beforehand.
Advance Bookings
For weekend trips, booking is essential. Restaurants like Sam's Chowder House and popular wineries such as Byington require reservations well in advance. Alice's Restaurant is walk-in only, but expect long waits during peak hours.
Weekend Traffic
This route is extremely popular with local drivers, motorcyclists, and cyclists, especially on weekends. Expect significant traffic and be vigilant for two-wheeled traffic on the tight, winding sections. For a more spirited drive, a weekday trip is recommended.
