Colorado High Country
The San Juan Skyway & Million Dollar Highway
Colorado High Country
The Million Dollar Highway is the crown jewel of Colorado driving. a narrow, winding road carved into sheer cliff faces with no guardrails, crossing Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet. The 25-mile stretch between Silverton and Ouray is among the most dramatic roads in North America.
This route pack builds a 3-4 day adventure around the full San Juan Skyway. a 236-mile circuit through Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and Cortez. The loop takes in mining-era ghost towns, hot springs, 13,000-foot peaks, and some of the finest mountain dining in Colorado.
The driving demands respect. The Million Dollar Highway section features tight switchbacks, narrow ledges, and no guardrails. this is not a road for the faint-hearted. But the reward is a landscape of almost incomprehensible beauty, where every turn reveals another valley, another waterfall, another peak reaching for the sky.
"They say the Million Dollar Highway got its name from the gold in the gravel. But anyone who has driven it knows the real treasure is the view from Red Mountain Pass at sunset, when the peaks turn the color of molten copper."

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Fill up your tank in Durango before heading north. Fuel stations are available in Ouray and Telluride, but are limited and more expensive in Silverton. It is recommended to not let your tank go below half-full.
Cell Coverage
Expect limited to no cell service on the Million Dollar Highway (US-550) between Silverton and Ouray. Download offline maps and music before you depart. Service is generally good in the towns.
Book Ahead
Reservations are essential for fine dining restaurants like Bon Ton in Ouray and 221 South Oak in Telluride, especially on weekends. Lodging in Ouray and Telluride should also be booked well in advance, particularly during peak seasons.
High Altitude Driving
The San Juan Skyway reaches elevations over 11,000 feet. Stay hydrated and be aware of the signs of altitude sickness. The Million Dollar Highway is not for the faint of heart; drive with caution and use pull-offs to let faster traffic pass.
Mountain Weather
Weather in the San Juan Mountains can change rapidly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer. Always check the forecast before you depart and be prepared for a wide range of temperatures.
Durango
The Base Camp
Arrive in Durango, a Victorian-era railroad town that serves as the perfect base for the San Juan Skyway. Walk the historic downtown, browse the galleries, and settle in for dinner at one of the town's excellent restaurants. If time allows, ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad β a heritage steam train that follows the Animas River gorge.
Arrive by early afternoon to allow ample time to explore historic downtown before evening.
Arrival into Durango is via US-160 or US-550, both are well-maintained highways with moderate traffic. City streets are easy to navigate.
Durango to Silverton to Ouray
The Million Dollar Highway
This is the day you came for. Drive north on US 550 through the Animas Valley to Silverton β a mining town frozen in time at 9,318 feet. Stop for coffee, then continue north on the Million Dollar Highway. The road climbs over three passes, each more dramatic than the last. Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet is the climax β narrow ledges, no guardrails, and views that make your heart stop. Descend into Ouray, the Switzerland of America, nestled in a box canyon surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks.
Depart Durango by 9:00 AM to enjoy the Million Dollar Highway in good light and with less traffic.
The Million Dollar Highway (US-550) is a challenging two-lane mountain road with steep cliffs, sharp curves, and no guardrails in many sections. Expect significant elevation changes and potential for slow-moving traffic. The road surface is asphalt and generally well-maintained, but can be affected by weather.

Colorado's finest roads
I've skied in Colorado for years but never explored the summer roads. What a revelation. The Stable found passes and valleys that rival anything in the Alps. The roadbook's weather and timing advice was invaluable.
Mountain driving perfection
The switchbacks, the views, the alpine meadows β this route has it all. The accommodation picks in the mountain towns were charming and the restaurant recommendations were surprisingly sophisticated for such remote locations.
Rocky Mountain high
Colorado's mountain passes are spectacular and this route connects the best of them. Independence Pass at 12,000 feet was breathtaking β literally. The Stable's altitude tips and fuel planning were essential.
