The route
This verified 136-mile circuit begins and ends in Lagos. Day one introduces the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade before following the western Algarve through Luz, Burgau and Vila do Bispo to Sagres Fortress and Cabo de Sao Vicente. Park at signed visitor areas and keep clear of exposed cliff edges.
Day two turns north through the protected Costa Vicentina. The route uses established roads through Carrapateira, Arrifana and Aljezur before crossing the N267 through Marmelete to Caldas de Monchique. The final day climbs through Monchique to the 902-metre Foia summit, then descends to Lagos through Portimao.
The route works through much of the year, but spring and early autumn usually balance daylight, temperature and visitor pressure best. Avoid the mountain stage in cloud, high wind or extreme heat.
