What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Availability
Fuel stations are plentiful in the larger towns like Riva del Garda and Bolzano. Be sure to fill up before heading into the high Dolomite passes on Day 4, as stations are scarce between Cortina and the Sella Pass loop.
Cellular Coverage
Expect excellent cell signal in towns and lower elevations. However, coverage can be unreliable to non-existent on remote sections of the mountain passes, particularly within the Strada della Forra gorge and on parts of Passo Giau.
Advance Bookings
Reservations are essential for fine dining restaurants like Lido 84 and Tivoli, often months in advance. It is also highly recommended to book accommodation in Cortina and Bolzano well ahead, especially during peak summer and winter seasons.
Driving The Passes
The mountain passes are the highlight but demand respect. Start early to avoid traffic, be prepared for cyclists and buses on narrow roads, and always check the weather and road status, as passes can close unexpectedly due to snow or rockfalls, even in summer.
Milan to Lake Iseo
Milan to Lovere
A gentle start to the tour with a scenic drive to the charming Lake Iseo, one of Italy's lesser-known but most beautiful lakes.
Depart Milan by 10:00 AM to enjoy a leisurely lunch in Lovere.
Mainly autostrada (A4) and well-maintained regional roads. Smooth asphalt, gentle curves, and moderate traffic. A relaxed and easy drive to ease into the tour.
Lake Iseo to Lake Garda
Lovere to Riva del Garda
Explore the dramatic western shore of Lake Garda, including the famous Strada della Forra β a road carved through sheer rock that James Bond fans will recognise from Quantum of Solace.
Depart Lovere by 9:00 AM to allow ample time for the Strada della Forra. It can get congested, especially on weekends.
A mix of lakeside roads and the challenging Strada della Forra (SP38). The Forra is extremely narrow, with tight, blind corners, low tunnels, and hairpin turns. One-way traffic uphill on the narrowest section. Paved but requires skill and a small car. Expect stunning gorge views and some stressful moments.
