The route

This verified route leaves Porto for Peso da Regua, follows the N222 to Pinhao, then continues through Sao Joao da Pesqueira and Vila Nova de Foz Coa before finishing in Lamego.

River roads are narrow and twisting, with agricultural traffic and limited sight lines. Check national road notices before departure and keep the driving day separate from wine tasting.

Spring and early autumn provide comfortable temperatures and excellent light. Harvest season is atmospheric but busy, so book accommodation, tastings and dinner well ahead.

Always top up your tank before heading into more remote areas, especially if exploring off the main N222 route. Diesel and unleaded (gasolina) are standard.

Mobile signal is generally good in urban centers and along the main N222. However, expect patchy or non-existent coverage in some of the deeper valleys and more remote, mountainous areas of the Douro. Download offline maps and essential information before you set off.
