The route

This verified circuit leaves Puerto de la Cruz for La Orotava, climbs into Teide National Park, links Roques de Garcia with the cable-car area, crosses to Masca and returns by the north-west coast.

Altitude, sharp temperature changes, cyclists and permit-controlled attractions require planning. Never stop outside marked pullouts in the national park.

October to May often brings cooler driving conditions. Check Tenerife tourism notices, park access and DGT traffic information before departure.

Tenerife's best road rises from subtropical coast to volcanic high country in a single morning.

Mobile phone signal can be intermittent or non-existent in the more remote parts of Teide National Park and especially within the Masca Gorge. Download offline maps and inform someone of your route before you go.

Reservations & Permits

For the Teide Cable Car, booking online in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season, to avoid long queues. If you plan to hike to the very summit of Pico del Teide, a separate permit is required and must be obtained well in advance from the National Parks office.

Driving Tips

Tenerife's mountain roads, particularly the TF-21 and the Masca road (TF-436), are well-maintained but can be winding and steep. Drive defensively, especially on blind corners. Be aware of cyclists and hikers.
