Tenerife is not the beach holiday island most people imagine — at least, not when you point your car uphill. The TF21 climbs from the lush northern coast through pine forests and into the caldera of Las Cañadas, a volcanic crater 17 kilometres wide. At its centre stands Pico del Teide, Spain's highest mountain at 3,718 metres, its peak often dusted with snow while the coast below basks in sunshine.

The drive is otherworldly. As you climb above 2,000 metres, the vegetation disappears and the landscape becomes lunar — fields of black and red volcanic rock, twisted lava formations, and a silence broken only by the wind. The road surface is excellent, the bends are sweeping and well-sighted, and the traffic is minimal outside peak tourist hours.

The best time to drive is early morning or late afternoon. At sunset, the phenomenon known as the "sea of clouds" fills the valleys below, and you drive above them — watching the sun sink into a cotton-wool ocean while the peak of Teide glows pink above. It is one of the most extraordinary driving experiences in Europe.

The route can be extended to include the Masca gorge road on the northwest coast — a series of tight hairpins descending through a dramatic ravine to a tiny village at the bottom. The road was closed for years for safety improvements and reopened in 2024, making it one of Tenerife's newest driving attractions.
