Look for 'Sans Plomb 95' (unleaded 95) or 'Gazole' (diesel). Most stations accept credit cards, but it's wise to carry some cash for smaller, unattended pumps, particularly in rural areas or late at night.
Mobile phone coverage is generally good in urban areas and along major routes. However, expect intermittent or no signal in the deep gorges of Verdon and on certain stretches of the Col de Turini. Consider downloading offline maps for navigation.
Especially during peak season (June to August) and weekends, booking accommodations and popular restaurants in advance is highly recommended, particularly in charming towns like Antibes, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and Castellane. Many smaller, family-run establishments may have limited capacity, and securing a table or room ensures a smoother experience. For fine dining, reservations are often essential.
For navigation, Google Maps or Waze are reliable, but consider downloading offline maps for areas with poor signal. For real-time traffic and speed camera alerts (use with caution, laws vary), Coyote or Waze are popular. For finding parking, apps like Parkopedia can be useful in towns.
French roads are generally well-maintained. Speed limits are strictly enforced: typically 130 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 50 km/h in urban areas. Be aware of tolls on motorways (A8 is tolled, N85 is not).
