Florida Keys Overseas Highway
Island-hopping across turquoise waters on America's most unique road
Florida Keys Overseas Highway
The Overseas Highway. US Route 1 through the Florida Keys. is unlike any other road in America. Built on the remains of Henry Flagler's audacious Over-Sea Railroad, it leaps across 42 bridges connecting a chain of coral and limestone islands stretching 113 miles from Key Largo to Key West. The Seven Mile Bridge alone is one of the most photographed roads on the continent.
This is not a road for speed. The pace of the Keys is deliberately slow. the locals call it 'Keys Disease,' and it's contagious. The drive itself is meditative: turquoise water on both sides, pelicans diving, fishing boats bobbing at anchor. But the stops along the way are what make this route extraordinary. world-class snorkeling at John Pennekamp, the quirky charm of Islamorada's fishing culture, the legendary seafood of Marathon, and the anything-goes spirit of Key West.
This route pack captures the full Keys experience: the drive, the food, the water, and the sunsets. It is the ultimate convertible-down, windows-open, salt-air-in-your-hair American road trip.

Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Gas stations are plentiful along US-1 in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, and Key West. Fill up before leaving the mainland for potentially better prices, and top off in major towns as prices can increase further down the Keys.
Cell Coverage
Cell service is generally reliable along the Overseas Highway, but you may experience brief dead zones on some of the longer bridges and less populated keys. Download offline maps as a backup.
Book Ahead
For popular restaurants like Latitudes and Santiago's Bodega, and for most waterfront hotels, booking weeks or even months in advance is essential, especially during winter and spring peak seasons.
Cash for Tolls & Tips
While most places accept credit cards, have cash on hand for the Card Sound Bridge toll, roadside fruit stands, and for tipping valets and tour guides.
Sun Protection
The Florida sun is intense. Pack high-SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Staying hydrated is crucial, so always have water with you.
Embrace 'Keys Time'
Things move at a more relaxed pace in the Keys. Don't rush the drive; allow plenty of time for spontaneous stops, enjoy the views, and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
Miami to Islamorada
Coral reefs, Key Largo, and the Sport Fishing Capital
Depart Miami and cross the Card Sound Bridge for a scenic alternative to the main highway. Stop at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo for snorkeling on America's only living coral barrier reef. Continue to Islamorada — the 'Sport Fishing Capital of the World' — for lunch at a waterfront fish house. Visit Robbie's Marina to feed the giant tarpon, then check into your oceanfront resort for sunset cocktails.
Depart Miami by 9:00 AM to enjoy the scenic drive and have ample time for stops before reaching Islamorada.
A mix of urban highway leaving Miami, transitioning to the two-lane Card Sound Bridge with tolls. The majority of the route is the iconic Overseas Highway (US-1), a two-lane road with long stretches over water on historic bridges. Expect moderate traffic, especially on weekends, and lower speed limits through towns like Key Largo.
Islamorada to Marathon
The Seven Mile Bridge and turtle hospitals
Explore Islamorada's art galleries and the History of Diving Museum, then drive south through Long Key State Park. Cross the legendary Seven Mile Bridge — the centerpiece of the Overseas Highway — with nothing but turquoise water stretching to the horizon. In Marathon, visit The Turtle Hospital for a guided tour of their sea turtle rehabilitation center. Dinner at a waterfront restaurant watching the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico.
Enjoy a relaxed morning in Islamorada, departing around 10:30 AM to allow for a full day of exploration en route to Marathon.
The drive continues on the two-lane Overseas Highway, characterized by stunning ocean vistas and the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. The road is generally flat and well-maintained, but can be narrow in sections. Be mindful of cyclists and pedestrians in populated areas.
