Napa & Sonoma Grand Tour

Napa and Sonoma are famous for wine, but the roads that connect them are some of the best driving in Northern California. This route pack goes beyond the main valley floors to explore the mountain roads, backroads, and hidden passes that link the two wine regions.

The Oakville Grade, Trinity Road, and the Calistoga-to-Geyserville corridor over the Mayacamas Mountains offer tight, technical driving through vineyards and oak-studded hillsides. The Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley in Sonoma County add sweeping valley roads with less traffic and equally impressive wines.

This is a route for people who love both driving and the good life. The itinerary balances morning drives through the mountains with afternoon tastings at some of California's most celebrated wineries, and evenings at restaurants that have earned Napa its reputation as America's culinary capital.

"The best wine roads are not the ones that take you to the most famous wineries. They are the ones that take you over the mountain to the next valley."

Before You Go

Trip Planning Essentials

Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.

Fuel Up in the Valleys

Gas stations are plentiful in the main towns of Napa and Sonoma, but are non-existent on the mountain passes like Oakville Grade and Trinity Road. Fill up your tank before you start climbing to avoid any issues.

Cell Service Dead Zones

Expect to lose cell signal and GPS on the winding mountain roads like Oakville Grade and Trinity Road. Download offline maps and your driving route beforehand.

Book Key Experiences Ahead

Top-tier restaurants like The French Laundry and wineries such as Jordan require reservations weeks or even months in advance. Plan and book these key stops well before your trip to avoid disappointment.

Embrace the Pace

The mountain roads are for driving, not racing. Take your time on the tight, technical sections of Oakville Grade and Trinity Road to safely enjoy the incredible views and challenging curves.

Winery Appointment Apps

Use apps like Tock or Resy to manage your tasting appointments, as many of the premium wineries in both Napa and Sonoma now require advance bookings through these platforms.

Napa Valley Floor

The Main Stage

Preview

Begin in the town of Napa and drive the Silverado Trail — the quieter, more scenic alternative to Highway 29. Stop at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars (the 1976 Judgment of Paris winner), then continue to Rutherford and Oakville for tastings at Opus One or Robert Mondavi.

Suggested Timing

Depart by 9:00 AM to enjoy the morning light and beat the tasting room crowds. Allow at least 3-4 hours for this section.

Road Character

A smooth, two-lane country road with gentle curves and excellent pavement. It's a relaxed and scenic drive with minimal elevation change, flanked by vineyards and oak trees. Traffic is light, especially on weekdays.

Oakville Grade

Over the Mayacamas

Preview

Turn west onto the Oakville Grade — a narrow, winding road that climbs over the Mayacamas Mountains from Napa to Sonoma. The road is tight and technical, with blind curves through dense forest and vineyard clearings. This is the driving highlight of the route.

Suggested Timing

Begin the climb around midday. The tight road requires focus, so it's best driven in full daylight.

Road Character

A narrow, technical climb with tight switchbacks, blind corners, and significant elevation gain of over 700 feet. The pavement is variable. Expect slow speeds (15-25 mph) and be cautious of cyclists and oncoming traffic.

More than just wine tasting

The driving roads between the wineries are the real star here. Twisty mountain passes with vineyard views in every direction. The Stable understands that the journey matters as much as the destination.

The ultimate Napa experience

We've visited Napa many times but always stuck to the main roads. This route pack opened up a completely different wine country — quiet lanes, hilltop vineyards, and restaurants we'd never have found. Exceptional.

Wine country driving perfection

This isn't just a winery tour — it's a proper driving route through some of Napa and Sonoma's most beautiful back roads. The Stable balanced the driving with the dining and tasting stops perfectly. We'll be back.
