The route

This verified 182-mile circuit begins in Thames and follows SH25 beside the Firth of Thames to Coromandel Town. It crosses Whangapoua Hill through Kuaotunu to Whitianga, then continues to the legal visitor access for Hahei and Cathedral Cove and onward to Hot Water Beach.

The eastern-coast stage runs through Tairua to Whangamata. The final return uses the sealed state-highway route through Waihi and Paeroa to Thames rather than the unsealed 309 Road.

SH25 remains vulnerable to slips, flooding and temporary traffic controls. NZTA recorded multiple 2026 storm closures and continues recovery work around the peninsula. Refresh Journey Planner before every stage, delay the drive in severe weather and never cross floodwater or a closure.
