Pacific Coast Highway
Auckland to the East Cape — the first place in the world to see the sunrise, with pristine beaches and Maori culture throughout.
Pacific Coast Highway
The Pacific Coast Highway is New Zealand's official touring route along the North Island's eastern seaboard — a journey from Auckland through the Coromandel Peninsula, the Bay of Plenty, and around the remote East Cape to Napier. It is one of the great coastal drives of the Southern Hemisphere.
The route begins with the Coromandel Peninsula — tight, winding roads through native bush to Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, and the gold-mining heritage of Thames and Coromandel Town. The peninsula is a microcosm of New Zealand's diversity — rainforest, beaches, and mountains packed into a compact area.
The Bay of Plenty — Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, and Whakatane — offers wider roads and golden beaches. The Mount (as locals call it) is one of New Zealand's great beach towns, with a volcanic cone, excellent surf, and a café culture that rivals any in the country.
The East Cape is the highlight — New Zealand's most remote and culturally rich region. The road follows the coast through small Maori communities, past carved meeting houses (wharenui), and to the East Cape Lighthouse — the first place in the world to see the sunrise each day. The landscape is wild and beautiful, the communities are welcoming, and the pace of life is unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.
The journey ends in Napier — the Art Deco capital of the world, rebuilt in the 1930s after a devastating earthquake. The Hawke's Bay wine region, surrounding Napier, produces some of New Zealand's finest red wines.
""The East Cape is New Zealand's soul — a place where the land meets the sea, where Maori culture is lived rather than performed, and where the first light of each new day touches the Earth." — Lonely Planet"

Auckland to Thames
Gateway to the Coromandel
Begin your journey by departing Auckland, heading southeast through the verdant expanse of the Hauraki Plains. This fertile agricultural region, characterized by its flat, pastoral landscapes, offers a gentle introduction to New Zealand's North Island. Your destination is Thames, a town steeped in history and serving as the official gateway to the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. Thames flourished during the 1860s gold rush, and its rich past is palpable in its well-preserved Victorian architecture and heritage sites. A visit to the Goldmine Experience provides an immersive look into the town's mining legacy, with opportunities to explore underground tunnels and learn about the arduous lives of early prospectors. The Thames Historical Museum further enriches this understanding, showcasing artifacts and stories from both Maori settlement and the European gold rush era. The town's charming main street is dotted with inviting cafes, perfect for a leisurely morning coffee, and on Saturdays, a vibrant market comes alive with local produce, artisanal crafts, and a lively community atmosphere. Thames is not just a historical stop; it's the perfect launchpad for the breathtaking coastal drives and natural wonders that await on the Coromandel Peninsula, with its unique blend of historical intrigue, cultural depth, and scenic beauty.
Morning — 9:00am
SH2 and SH25 from Auckland. Easy highway driving through farmland. The road narrows as you approach the Coromandel.
Coromandel Peninsula
Beaches & Bush
The Coromandel Peninsula is a region of breathtaking natural beauty, characterized by its rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, and lush native bush. As SH25 winds its way from Thames, you'll encounter charming Coromandel Town, a historic settlement with a rich gold mining past. Continue your journey to discover the iconic attractions of Whitianga, Hot Water Beach, and Cathedral Cove. Hot Water Beach offers a unique geothermal experience where visitors can dig their own hot pools in the sand at low tide, a truly unforgettable activity. Further along the coast, Cathedral Cove, accessible by foot or kayak, reveals a magnificent natural archway carved into white cliffs, leading to a secluded beach. This picturesque spot is one of New Zealand's most photographed locations, offering stunning views and a sense of serene isolation. The roads throughout the peninsula are often tight and winding, presenting an engaging drive through dense native forests and along dramatic coastal stretches, with spectacular Pacific beaches appearing at every turn.
Afternoon — 2:00pm
Winding coastal and bush roads. SH25 is narrow in places with tight bends. Beautiful driving but take your time.
