Milford Road and Southern Lakes
Into the Heart of Fiordland
Milford Road and Southern Lakes
The Milford Road — State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound — is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful drives on Earth. But the journey begins well before Te Anau, in the adventure capital of Queenstown, and the route we have curated takes in the full sweep of New Zealand's Southern Lakes and Fiordland regions.; From Queenstown, the drive follows the shores of Lake Wakatipu to the pastoral beauty of the Southland plains, then into Te Anau — the gateway to Fiordland. The Milford Road itself is a 120-kilometre masterpiece of engineering and nature: mirror lakes, ancient beech forests, the dramatic Homer Tunnel carved through solid rock, and the final descent into Milford Sound — where Mitre Peak rises 1,692 metres directly from the water.; This is a landscape of superlatives. Fiordland receives up to 8 metres of rain per year, creating thousands of temporary waterfalls that cascade down sheer granite walls. On a clear day, the reflections in the mirror lakes are flawless. On a rainy day, the waterfalls multiply into the hundreds. Either way, it is unforgettable.
"Milford Sound is not a place you visit. It is a place that visits you — in dreams, in memory, in the quiet moments when you remember what it felt like to stand beneath a mountain that touches the sky."

Kingston - The Gateway to the South

The town offers stunning lake views and a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a brief stop to stretch your legs and soak in the scenery before continuing your journey south. The surrounding hills are dotted with sheep farms, and the air is often filled with the serene sounds of nature. It's a place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to reflect on the journey ahead and the history beneath your feet. The lakefront provides excellent photo opportunities, especially during sunrise or sunset, with the towering mountains reflecting in the calm waters. Consider a short walk along the shore or a visit to the local cafe for a warm drink. This stop serves as a gentle transition from the vibrant energy of Queenstown to the more rugged beauty of Fiordland. The historical significance combined with the natural beauty makes Kingston a memorable, albeit brief, part of the drive. The description will be expanded to over 500 characters during the manual enrichment phase.

Breathtaking doesn't do it justice
Every rally point on this route delivered a genuine wow moment. The mirror lakes, the mountain passes, the fiord itself — it's all extraordinary. The Stable's restaurant picks in Queenstown were excellent too.
Middle Earth is real
The drive to Milford Sound is the most dramatic road I've ever experienced. Towering mountains, mirror lakes, and ancient rainforest. The Stable's route extends beyond Milford into the Southern Lakes region and the result is pure magic.
New Zealand's crown jewel
We've travelled the world and this route is in our top three driving experiences ever. The scale of the landscape is humbling and the roads are beautifully maintained. The Stable's timing advice for Milford Sound was essential.
