The route

This 378-mile itinerary leaves Queenstown for Kingston and Te Anau, follows SH94 through Mirror Lakes and Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound, then returns to Queenstown. Plan three driving days with Te Anau overnights before and after the Milford visit; a fourth day provides more flexibility.

SH94 is vulnerable to snow, ice, avalanches, rockfall and sudden closure. Check the official Milford Road status before travel and obey chain, stopping and tunnel instructions.

Allow at least two hours each way between Te Anau and Milford Sound before sightseeing or a cruise. The final stage includes the return to Te Anau on Day 2 and the onward drive to Queenstown on Day 3. Cruise fares, parking, accommodation and optional excursions are separate.

The southern shore of Lake Wakatipu

Leave Queenstown on SH6 and follow Lake Wakatipu south to Kingston. Keep this first stage unhurried: stop only at designated places with safe entry and exit, then take a lakeside break in Kingston before the inland drive to Te Anau. Kingston is the end of this stage; Te Anau belongs to the next leg.

Your Fiordland overnight base

From Kingston, continue inland on the member route to Te Anau. Make this the preparation and overnight stop before Milford Road: fill the tank, collect food and water, save navigation and booking details offline, and check the next day's road status. A lakefront walk is an optional finish after the driving is done.

Leave Te Anau with a full tank and enough range for the return journey. Do not base the plan on limited remote fuel availability; take food and water with you.

Cell Coverage

Coverage is limited and is not continuous. DOC lists reception at Te Anau Downs, Totara Campsite, The Divide and Milford Sound. Save maps and booking confirmations offline before departure.

Fiordland Weather

Fiordland is one of the wettest places on Earth. Rain is likely regardless of season, but it makes the waterfalls spectacular. Pack waterproof layers.

Advance Bookings

Confirm cruise check-in, parking and both Te Anau overnights before setting out. Build in stops and tunnel delays; DOC suggests an eight-hour day for a Te Anau return with sights and a cruise.
