Volcanic Plateau & Desert Road
Three volcanoes, a tussock desert, and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing — the North Island's most dramatic landscape.
Volcanic Plateau & Desert Road
The Volcanic Plateau is the North Island's most dramatic landscape — a high, windswept plateau dominated by three active volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films), and Ruapehu, the North Island's highest peak at 2,797 metres.
The Desert Road (State Highway 1) crosses this landscape in a 50-kilometre stretch of tussock-covered plateau between Waiouru and Turangi. It is called the Desert Road not because it is hot and sandy, but because it is barren and exposed — a landscape of volcanic rock, tussock grass, and vast skies that feels more like Iceland than the Pacific. The road runs straight and fast across the plateau, with the volcanoes rising to the west in a display of geological power.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing — New Zealand's most famous day walk — traverses the volcanic terrain between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, passing emerald lakes, red craters, and steaming vents. Even if you don't walk the full crossing, the shorter walks from the Whakapapa Village offer access to the volcanic landscape.
Around the plateau, the roads offer variety. The Ohakune Mountain Road climbs to the Turoa ski field on Ruapehu's southern slopes. The road from National Park village to Whakapapa winds through native bush with views of Ngauruhoe's perfect cone. And the Tongariro River, flowing from the mountains to Lake Taupo, is one of the world's great trout fishing rivers.
This is a landscape of extremes — snow in winter, desert heat in summer, and volcanic activity that reminds you the Earth is very much alive beneath your wheels.

Turangi & Tongariro River
Trout Fishing Capital

This river is a mecca for fly-fishing enthusiasts, boasting an abundance of rainbow and brown trout in its clear, cold waters that originate from the volcanic plateau. Even if fishing isn"t your passion, the riverside walks offer serene beauty and a chance to connect with nature. A visit to the Tongariro National Trout Centre is highly recommended, where you can observe trout in their natural habitat through an underwater viewing chamber and learn about the river"s ecosystem.
