The route
This verified route leaves Ambleside for Wrynose and Hardknott passes, returns through Kirkstone Pass, then visits Ullswater and Grasmere.
The major passes are extremely steep, narrow and unsuitable for some vehicles or inexperienced drivers. Check weather and highway notices, and turn back if visibility or traction is poor.
April to October usually provides the best opportunity, but rain and mist are possible at any time. Begin early and avoid creating pressure for other road users.

Wrynose Pass climbs from Little Langdale to the Three Shire Stone , the historic meeting point of Lancashire, Cumberland, and Westmorland. The road is steep (1-in-4 in places) and narrow, but the sightlines are better than Hardknott and the surface is reasonable. The views from the top across the Duddon Valley are magnificent.
