The route

This verified 516-mile circuit begins and ends in Inverness, crossing to Applecross before following the west and north coasts through Assynt, Durness and Caithness. The return runs south through Wick, Helmsdale and Dornoch.

Many stages use narrow single-track roads. Never park in a passing place, allow following traffic to overtake and check vehicle suitability before Bealach na Ba.

May to September offers long daylight, but conditions can change quickly. Check Traffic Scotland and the official North Coast 500 guidance before every stage.
