The route

Colorado High Country is a verified 254-mile journey around the San Juan Skyway, including the return spur into Telluride. The route leaves Durango on US 550, crosses Coal Bank and Molas passes to Silverton, continues over Red Mountain Pass to Ouray, then uses US 550, CO 62 and CO 145 across Dallas Divide to Telluride. It returns over Lizard Head Pass through Rico, Dolores, Cortez and Mancos.

The state-designated San Juan Skyway is 236 miles. The member total is higher because it includes the paved Telluride town spur in both directions rather than implying that the main loop runs through the historic center. Mesa Verde is presented as an optional additional day and is not hidden inside the mileage.

This is serious high-altitude driving. Snow, thunderstorms, rockfall, wildfire, construction and avalanche work can change access quickly. In 2026, Red Mountain Pass road and tunnel repairs can add delays and scheduled closures. Check COtrip before every stage and turn back whenever conditions exceed the driver or vehicle.

Fuel Stops

Begin each mountain stage with adequate fuel or charge. Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Dolores and Cortez are the practical service anchors, but hours and chargers can change.

Cell Coverage

Service can disappear between the towns. Download the exact member route, a second offline map and current road notices before leaving reliable coverage.

Book Ahead

Reserve important dining and accommodation directly. Treat Mesa Verde as a separate day: cliff dwelling entry generally requires a reserved ranger-led tour, and park drives can take 55 to 90 minutes.

High Altitude Driving

US 550 is a paved, exposed high-mountain highway with steep grades, sharp bends and limited shoulders. CDOT's 2026 Red Mountain Pass work can add traffic control, delays, width restrictions and scheduled closures. Check COtrip before every stage.

Mountain Weather

Snow, thunderstorms, rockfall, wildfire and avalanche work can change access quickly. Check official road and weather reports before departure, carry water and warm layers, and turn back when conditions exceed the driver or vehicle.
