The route

This 356-mile, three-day journey links the Mendocino coast, Anderson Valley, Humboldt Redwoods and the remote Lost Coast. The verified route corrects the inherited itinerary, which incorrectly sent drivers south through Fort Bragg before turning onto Highway 128. The actual opening runs south from Mendocino to the Navarro River, then east through Anderson Valley before continuing north on US 101.

Day two begins near Benbow, follows the Avenue of the Giants through old-growth redwoods, briefly returns south on US 101 to the Mattole Road junction, then crosses through Honeydew, Petrolia and Cape Mendocino to Ferndale. The final stage travels through Eureka to Trinidad. The scheduled three days are demanding, and an extra night in Ferndale, Eureka or Trinidad makes the experience more relaxed.

Treat the remote crossing as weather-dependent. Check official road conditions immediately before departure.
