What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Fuel is available in Murphys and Sonora before ascending Sonora Pass. The next reliable fuel is in Bridgeport, over 100 miles away. Fill up in Lee Vining before climbing Tioga Pass, as there are no services in the Yosemite high country.
Cell Coverage
Expect no cell service on Sonora Pass (Highway 108) and Tioga Pass (Highway 120). Service is also spotty on US 395 between Bridgeport and Lee Vining. Download offline maps and music before you go.
Advance Bookings
Reservations are essential for The Ahwahnee Dining Room (book months ahead) and recommended for Grounds Restaurant in Murphys. Lodging in Yosemite and June Lake should be booked 6-12 months in advance for summer travel.
Pass Closures
Sonora and Tioga Passes are closed all winter, typically from November to late May or early June. Always check Caltrans road conditions (roads.dot.ca.gov) before your trip, as conditions can change rapidly.
Download Offline Maps
Before you go, download the entire route area in Google Maps or your preferred navigation app. This will be critical in the extensive no-service zones across the Sierra passes.

We drove this over two days and stayed at the recommended lodge. The route planning was impeccable — every pass was better than the last. The GPS files saved us from several wrong turns on unmarked mountain roads.
