Tasmania's Great Eastern Drive
The Island at the Edge of the World
Tasmania's Great Eastern Drive
Tasmania's East Coast is one of the last truly unspoiled coastal drives in the developed world. The Great Eastern Drive traces 283 kilometres from Orford to the Bay of Fires, passing through landscapes so pristine they feel almost prehistoric — which, in geological terms, they are. The centrepiece is Freycinet National Park, home to Wineglass Bay — consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. But the entire coast is extraordinary: white sand beaches backed by granite headlands, crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, and a food culture that punches far above its weight. Tasmanian oysters, abalone, and cool-climate wines are world-class. We have extended the route to include the approach from Hobart through the Coal River Valley wine region and the return via the Midlands heritage highway. The pace is deliberately unhurried — this is a drive for those who want to slow down, breathe the cleanest air on the planet, and rediscover what coastal driving felt like before the world got busy. This journey is not just about the destinations, but the spaces in between: the empty beaches, the quiet roads, and the feeling of having a world-class coastline almost to yourself. It is a sensory immersion into a place where nature still dictates the rhythm of life, offering a profound sense of escape and renewal.
"Tasmania is not the end of the world, but you can see it from here. And what you see — the light, the air, the water — is unlike anything else on Earth."

Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Hobart to Orford via Coal River Valley
Wine Country Departure
Begin your journey in Hobart and detour through the Coal River Valley — Tasmania's warmest wine region, producing exceptional pinot noir and sparkling wine. The valley is steeped in history, with the charming town of Richmond and its convict-built bridge offering a glimpse into the past. Visit Frogmore Creek and Pooley Wines for world-class tastings before continuing to the coastal town of Orford, the official start of the Great Eastern Drive. The transition from historic vineyards to the sparkling coastline sets the perfect tone for the days ahead.
Morning — 9:00am
Easy, well-maintained highway through gentle farmland and vineyard country. Light traffic and good signage throughout.
Maria Island Ferry from Triabunna
Wildlife & Convict History
Before heading further north, take a detour from Triabunna to catch the passenger ferry to Maria Island National plate. This car-free island is a haven for wildlife, including wombats, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils. Explore the World Heritage-listed Darlington convict settlement, walk to the spectacular Painted Cliffs with their beautifully patterned sandstone, or hike to the Fossil Cliffs. It's a tranquil escape that perfectly combines Tasmania's rich history with its extraordinary natural beauty.
Afternoon — 1:00pm
No driving on the island. The drive to Triabunna is an easy coastal highway.

The road trip Australia forgot
While everyone drives the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania's east coast is quietly spectacular. The roads are smooth, the scenery is dramatic, and there's virtually no traffic. The Stable's accommodation picks were charming heritage cottages.
Wild, beautiful, and unforgettable
The Tasmanian landscape is unlike anywhere else in Australia. Pristine beaches, ancient forests, and charming towns. The Stable's rally points took us to places that felt completely untouched. The oyster farm stop was a highlight.
Tasmania is a driving paradise
Tasmania is Australia's best-kept secret and this route captures its wild beauty perfectly. The eastern coastline is stunning, the roads are empty, and the seafood is the freshest we've ever tasted. The Stable nailed this one.
