Los Angeles has two very different driving landscapes: the high, exposed sweep of Angeles Crest Highway and the tighter Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu. They make a satisfying day only when treated as separate stages with a real transfer between them.

Start with road access, not a fixed itinerary

Angeles Crest Highway is SR 2, a mountain road whose access can change after storms, rockfall and repair work. Caltrans directs drivers to its SR 2 condition report and QuickMap for current restrictions. The Angeles National Forest also publishes alerts and fire-status information.

Do not plan the day around a presumed through-route. Check the specific sections you intend to use shortly before leaving, carry water and use offline navigation where signal may be limited.

Make the mountain and coast separate stages

The Angeles Crest stage begins from La Cañada Flintridge and uses the historic Newcomb's Ranch location as a turnaround landmark. It is not a food, fuel or public-access promise. The Malibu stage follows Mulholland Highway through the Santa Monica Mountains, descends Decker Road and reaches Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu.

The transfer between those stages is additional travel. Leave room for it and for coastal traffic rather than treating the whole day as a continuous scenic loop.

Allow enough time for the coast

Pacific Coast Highway can be affected by recovery work, traffic control and changing conditions. Check Caltrans's Palisades Fire recovery information and current conditions before setting a dinner reservation or a fixed arrival time. Use only legal turnouts and parking when stopping for the view.

A practical one-day outline

  1. Check SR 2, forest alerts and weather before departure.
  2. Drive the available Angeles Crest stage, allowing time to return toward Los Angeles.
  3. Make the transfer, refuel and reset the plan before the Santa Monica Mountains stage.
  4. Drive Mulholland and Decker only when the road and conditions suit the day.
  5. Finish on Pacific Coast Highway with time for traffic and the journey onward.

Use a route-specific roadbook

The LA Canyons & Coast Drive Pack gives the two stages their proper context, with Rally Points, preparation notes and an honest distinction between scenic mileage and the transfer. Review the public preview for the route, inclusions and purchase options.
