The Route

LA Canyons & Coast

Los Angeles is home to some of the finest canyon driving in America, and this route pack stitches together the best of it into a single extraordinary day. The morning begins with Angeles Crest Highway. a 66-mile climb from the San Gabriel Valley floor into the Angeles National Forest, gaining over 5,000 feet of elevation through relentless switchbacks.

After lunch at the legendary Newcomb's Ranch at 5,600 feet, the route drops back toward the city before picking up Mulholland Highway. the famous canyon road that winds through the Santa Monica Mountains to the coast. Connecting roads like Decker Canyon and Encinal Canyon add variety before the route delivers you to Malibu for a sunset dinner on the Pacific.

This is the drive that every LA car enthusiast knows by heart. Now it comes with the restaurants, the stops, and the insider knowledge that makes it unforgettable.

"In Los Angeles, the best roads are hiding in plain sight β€” you just need to know where to turn."

Trip Planning Essentials

Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.

Cell Coverage

Expect zero cell service on Angeles Crest Highway and deep in the Santa Monica Mountains (like Decker Canyon). Download offline maps before departing.

Advance Booking

Nobu Malibu requires reservations exactly one month in advance. The Old Place also books up weeks ahead for weekend dinners.

Road Conditions

Watch for falling rocks and debris on Angeles Crest Highway, especially after rain. Decker Canyon is extremely steep and technicalβ€”ensure your brakes are in good condition.

LA's best-kept driving secrets

I've lived in LA for 15 years and this route showed me roads I never knew existed. Mulholland to the coast and back through the canyons β€” absolute perfection. The rally points are brilliantly chosen.

A proper driving day out

We did this on a Saturday morning and it was magical. Empty canyon roads, stunning views, and the lunch stop recommendation was incredible. Already planning our second run.
