The Grande Corniche, the highest, follows Napoleon's old road along the ridge with views stretching to Corsica on clear days. The Moyenne Corniche threads through the medieval village of Èze, perched like an eagle's nest 427 metres above the sea. The Basse Corniche hugs the waterline through Villefranche-sur-Mer, Beaulieu, and Cap Ferrat — the peninsula of billionaires.
This route extends the Corniche experience with a loop through the Provençal backcountry — the perfume town of Grasse, the Gorges du Loup, and the hilltop villages of Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Gourdon. The Grande Corniche climbs from Nice to 520 metres above the sea, following the route of the ancient Via Julia Augusta. At La Turbie, the Trophée des Alpes — a Roman monument celebrating Augustus's conquest of the Alpine tribes — stands above Monaco. The views from here are staggering: the entire Riviera laid out below like a relief map.
