The route

This verified point-to-point route crosses Crown Range Road from Queenstown to Wanaka, visits Lake Hawea and Cromwell, then follows Lindis Pass and Lake Pukaki to Aoraki Mount Cook and the Tasman Valley.

The alpine roads are exposed to snow, ice, wind and rapid weather changes. Check the NZTA Journey Planner before every stage and carry chains whenever official guidance requires them.

October to April normally offers the broadest access window. Even in summer, allow generous time for photo stops, road works and slower vehicles on the mountain approaches.

Fuel Stops

Available in Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell, and Twizel. No fuel between Omarama and Twizel (about 60 km). Fill up before crossing the Lindis Pass.

Cell Coverage

Good in towns. Limited on the Crown Range and Lindis Pass. No coverage at Mount Cook Village (Wi-Fi available at The Hermitage).

Advance Bookings

Wanaka and Queenstown accommodation books out well in advance during summer (Dec to Feb) and ski season (Jun to Sep). Cellar door appointments at Felton Road should be made at least a week ahead.
