The route

The Bay Area Skyline is a verified 119-mile, one-day drive connecting the San Mateo coast with the Santa Cruz Mountains. It begins in Half Moon Bay, crosses Highway 92 to Skyline Boulevard, reaches Alice's at the Highway 84 junction, then descends through La Honda to San Gregorio.

From the coast, the route follows Highway 1 south through Pescadero and Davenport to Santa Cruz. The final stage climbs Highway 9 through Felton, Boulder Creek and Saratoga Gap before finishing in Los Gatos. This replaces an inherited itinerary that sent drivers in contradictory directions and omitted the long coastal connection to Highway 9.

Spring and autumn usually provide the best balance of visibility, daylight and traffic. The route can work outside those seasons, but fog, rain, fire restrictions and road works can change conditions quickly. Check Caltrans before departure and keep all tasting separate from the driving day.

Where the route takes you

Start in Half Moon Bay, climb to Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) and Alice’s, then descend through La Honda to San Gregorio. Follow the coast through Pescadero and Santa Cruz before taking Highway 9 through the redwoods toward Los Gatos.

This is a point-to-point drive, not a loop. Allow extra time and mileage to reach Half Moon Bay and return from Los Gatos.

Is this only a Skyline Boulevard drive?

Skyline Boulevard is the mountain-road section of this wider Bay Area itinerary. The complete 119-mile route also includes the coast and Highway 9 through the redwoods. Allow a full day for the pack; driving Skyline Boulevard alone is a shorter, separate plan.

For the ridge section, check the Caltrans Highway 35 condition report. Check the other roads in your plan separately before departure.

How much time to allow

1 Day · 119 miles. Set aside a full day for the complete route, with time for lunch and coastal stops. Add an overnight stay if you want longer walks or a slower visit to Santa Cruz.

The trip length includes time to explore. It is not a continuous driving-time estimate. Traffic, weather and road restrictions can change your schedule.
