San Diego Highlands
From Sea Level to the Stars
San Diego Highlands
San Diego's driving roads are an underrated treasure. This route pack combines Palomar Mountain. a technical, engaging climb from 700 to 5,500 feet through 21 tight hairpin turns. with the Ortega Highway, Temecula Valley wine country, and the dramatic desert-edge roads of eastern San Diego County.
The South Grade Road up Palomar Mountain is the star: a series of tight, well-banked switchbacks through oak and pine forest that rewards precise driving. At the summit, the Palomar Observatory offers a unique stop before the descent. The route then loops through Temecula's 40+ wineries for an afternoon of tasting before returning along the coast.
This is a route that surprises people. San Diego is known for beaches, but the backcountry roads are world-class.
"Twenty-one hairpin turns separate sea level from the stars. That is the kind of road worth getting up early for."

San Diego's hidden gem roads
I had no idea these roads existed so close to San Diego. The route through the highlands is twisty, scenic, and virtually empty. The Stable found something special here.
Perfect weekend escape
We left the coast behind and within 30 minutes we were on empty mountain roads with incredible views. The lunch stop in Julian was charming. A perfect day drive from San Diego.
