The Route

Santa Barbara Coast

Santa Barbara earns its American Riviera nickname with a combination of Mediterranean architecture, year-round sunshine, and a wine country that stretches from the coast to the Santa Ynez Valley. The city itself is one of the most walkable in California — State Street runs from the mountains to the sea, lined with boutiques, wine bars, and restaurants in beautifully preserved Spanish Colonial buildings. The drive north through the Santa Ynez Valley passes through the Sideways wine country, while the coastal route south through Carpinteria and Ventura offers a gentler, less-travelled alternative to the main PCH corridor.

"Santa Barbara is what California was supposed to look like before the rest of it happened. Red tiles, white walls, palm trees, and a mountain backdrop that turns pink at sunset."

Before You Go

Trip Planning Essentials

Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.

Fuel Stops

Gas stations are plentiful in Santa Barbara and the main towns of the Santa Ynez Valley. It's wise to fill up before driving the more remote sections of Foxen Canyon Road, as services are sparse.

Cell Coverage

Cell service is reliable in Santa Barbara and Montecito, but can be patchy on Highway 154 over San Marcos Pass and in the canyons of the Santa Ynez Valley. Download maps for offline use.

Advance Bookings

Reservations are essential for top restaurants like The Lark and Lucky's, and for most wineries on weekends. Accommodations should be booked well in advance, especially during peak season.

Scenic Route Tip

Highway 154 offers stunning views, but it's a winding mountain road. Allow plenty of time, use the turnouts to let faster traffic pass, and be mindful of cyclists who frequent the route.

State Street & the Waterfront

The Heart of the American Riviera

Preview

Begin at the Santa Barbara Courthouse — the most beautiful public building in California, with a mural room and clock tower offering panoramic views. Walk State Street south to Stearns Wharf, the oldest working wooden pier on the West Coast, then east along the beachfront path to the harbor.

Suggested Timing

Start by 9:00 AM to enjoy the morning light and fewer crowds, especially for the courthouse tower view.

Road Character

City streets with moderate traffic. State Street is pedestrian-friendly, but watch for cross-traffic. The waterfront path is a flat, easy drive or walk.

Santa Barbara Mission & Museum

Queen of the Missions

Preview

The Santa Barbara Mission, founded in 1786, is the best-preserved of the California missions. The rose garden, twin bell towers, and cemetery are extraordinary. The adjacent Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has one of the finest collections of Chumash artefacts in the world.

Suggested Timing

Arrive by 11:00 AM to allow 1.5-2 hours for the Mission and museum before a late lunch.

Road Character

Uphill drive on well-maintained city roads. Traffic is generally light, but the area can be busy with tour buses mid-day.

A perfect coastal escape

We did this as a weekend trip from LA and it was the best decision we've made. The route, the stops, the accommodation — everything was curated with obvious care and local knowledge.

Santa Barbara's finest roads

The coastal sections are gorgeous but the mountain roads behind Santa Barbara are where this route really shines. The Stable found some incredible twisty bits that had me grinning from ear to ear.
