Douro Valley & Nacional 2
The road voted "Best in the World" — winding through UNESCO-listed terraced vineyards above the Douro River.
Douro Valley & Nacional 2
The N222 was voted the world's best driving road by Avis, and once you thread its curves above the Douro River, you'll understand why. This is not a road of extremes — no alpine hairpins, no sheer cliff drops — but rather a masterclass in rhythm. The bends flow one into the next with a cadence that rewards smooth, committed driving.
The route begins in Porto, Portugal's granite-and-tile second city, where port wine lodges line the Douro's south bank. From here, the road climbs into the UNESCO-listed Alto Douro Wine Region — a landscape of terraced vineyards that have been carved into schist hillsides for over two thousand years. Every bend reveals another postcard: a quinta with whitewashed walls, a rabelo boat moored below, a hillside striped with vines turning gold in autumn.
Between Peso da Régua and Pinhão lies the finest section — 25 kilometres of unbroken driving pleasure above the river. Beyond Pinhão, the valley narrows and the road becomes more intimate, climbing to São João da Pesqueira and the viewpoint at São Salvador do Mundo, where the Douro bends in a perfect horseshoe far below.
This is a route for drivers who appreciate subtlety. The rewards are not adrenaline but atmosphere — the scent of eucalyptus and pine, the warmth of schist walls radiating the afternoon sun, and the knowledge that you are driving through one of the oldest demarcated wine regions on Earth.

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Availability
While major towns like Porto, Peso da Régua, and Pinhão have readily available fuel stations, options become sparse as you venture into the upper Douro. Always top up your tank before heading into more remote areas, especially if exploring off the main N222 route. Diesel and unleaded (gasolina) are standard.
Mobile Signal & Connectivity
Mobile signal is generally good in urban centers and along the main N222. However, expect patchy or non-existent coverage in some of the deeper valleys and more remote, mountainous areas of the Douro. Download offline maps and essential information before you set off.
Reservations & Bookings
For popular quintas, Michelin-starred restaurants like DOC, and boutique accommodations, advance reservations are absolutely essential, especially during peak season (spring and harvest). Many smaller, authentic tascas also benefit from a call ahead, particularly for dinner.
Useful Apps
Google Maps or Waze are invaluable for navigation, though be mindful of signal drops. For toll roads, consider the Via Verde app or device. Translator apps can be helpful in smaller villages, and a good wine region app can enhance your tasting experiences.
Driving Tips & Etiquette
Portuguese drivers are generally courteous. On narrow, winding roads, be prepared for slower agricultural vehicles. Always yield to traffic already in a roundabout. Speed limits are strictly enforced, and tolls on motorways are often electronic. Enjoy the N222, but don't rush the views.
Porto
Gateway to the Douro
Begin your Douro adventure in Porto, a city where history clings to every azulejo-tiled facade and the scent of port wine hangs in the air. Start in the labyrinthine Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where medieval lanes tumble down to the Douro waterfront. Take a leisurely stroll along the Cais da Ribeira, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and admiring the colorful, stacked houses. For an iconic view, cross the majestic Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, to Vila Nova de Gaia. Here, the historic port wine lodges beckon. Indulge in a tasting at renowned houses like Graham's, Taylor's, or Sandeman, learning about the region's most famous export. Before leaving the city, immerse yourself in Porto's rich culture by visiting the stunning São Bento Railway Station, adorned with 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting historical scenes, or browse the ornate Lello bookshop, said to have inspired J.K. Rowling. The bustling Bolhão market offers a sensory overload of local produce and traditional crafts, setting a vibrant tone before you embark on the scenic drive east. This initial exploration of Porto provides a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights, preparing you for the natural beauty of the Douro Valley.
Allow a full day to explore Porto's highlights before heading east. Aim to depart Porto by late morning on Day 1 to reach Peso da Régua by early afternoon.
Urban driving through Porto's narrow streets. Take the A4 motorway east to begin the valley approach.
Peso da Régua
Heart of the Douro Wine Region
Peso da Régua serves as the vibrant, unofficial capital of the Douro wine region and marks the true beginning of the legendary N222. As you approach, the landscape dramatically opens up, revealing the confluence of the Corgo and Douro rivers, a sight that signals your deep immersion into wine country. Your first stop should be the Douro Museum, an essential visit to grasp the profound history and intricate processes of port wine production. The museum offers a comprehensive insight into the region's viticultural heritage, from ancient traditions to modern techniques. Afterwards, take a relaxing walk along the riverside promenade, observing the traditional rabelo boats, once used to transport wine barrels downriver to Porto. Régua is not just a gateway; it's a place to feel the pulse of the Douro, with its bustling market and local eateries. From here, the N222 truly begins its winding journey, promising an unforgettable driving experience through terraced vineyards and breathtaking vistas. Ensure your camera is ready, as every turn offers a new postcard-perfect scene.
Arrive in Peso da Régua by early afternoon on Day 1. Spend 2-3 hours exploring the museum and riverside before continuing on the N222. Consider an overnight stay here to fully appreciate the town.
The N222 begins in earnest. Flowing curves above the river with excellent sight lines. A driver's road from the first bend.
