Geiranger to Bergen Fjord Run
Connect Norway's most famous fjord to its most beautiful city via ferry crossings, mountain passes, and waterfalls.
Geiranger to Bergen Fjord Run
This is the definitive Norwegian fjord drive — connecting the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord to the Hanseatic city of Bergen through a succession of ferry crossings, mountain passes, and waterfall-lined valleys. Every element of Norway's dramatic landscape is represented: deep blue fjords, snow-capped peaks, cascading waterfalls, and tiny farming communities clinging to impossibly steep hillsides.
The route begins at Geiranger, where the fjord narrows to a corridor of sheer rock walls and the Seven Sisters waterfall plunges 250 metres into the water below. The Dalsnibba viewpoint, reached by a toll road climbing to 1,500 metres, offers a bird's-eye view of the entire fjord — one of Norway's most photographed panoramas.
From Geiranger, the road climbs over the Strynefjellet pass and descends to Nordfjord, where a ferry crossing adds rhythm to the journey. The route continues through the Sognefjord region — Norway's longest and deepest fjord — before the final approach to Bergen through the Hardanger region.
Bergen itself is the perfect finale: a UNESCO-listed Hanseatic wharf of colourful wooden buildings, a fish market that has operated since the 13th century, and the Fløibanen funicular climbing to a viewpoint above the city's seven mountains. After days of driving through wilderness, Bergen's cosmopolitan warmth is a welcome contrast.
""The Geiranger to Bergen run is Norway distilled — every fjord, every waterfall, every mountain pass compressed into five unforgettable days.""

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Fuel Stops
Fill up in Geiranger before departing — the mountain roads have no fuel for 60+ miles. Ålesund has multiple stations. Voss has a station on the E16. Bergen has stations throughout the city. Carry a full tank on any mountain section.
Cell Coverage
Coverage is good in Geiranger, Ålesund, Voss, and Bergen. Expect gaps on the Hardanger Plateau and in the mountain tunnels. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before departing. The Trollstigen approach has limited coverage.
Reservation Requirements
Hotel Union Geiranger and Storfjord Hotel book out weeks ahead in summer — reserve early. Maki in Ålesund requires advance booking. Bergen fish market is walk-in. Enhjørningen in Bergen: book 1-2 weeks ahead for dinner. Ferry crossings on the E39 are pay-on-arrival — no booking needed.
Recommended Apps
Ruter for public transport in Bergen. Fjord Norway app for ferry timetables and road conditions. Yr.no for Norwegian weather forecasts — essential for mountain pass conditions. Download offline maps before leaving Ålesund. Vegvesen.no for live road conditions and tunnel closures.
Best Time to Drive
June to August for maximum daylight and open mountain passes. Trollstigen typically opens in May and closes in October — check vegvesen.no before departing. July is peak season — expect queues at Trollstigen. Late May and early September offer better road conditions and fewer crowds. The midnight sun from late June adds extraordinary light to the fjord sections.
Geiranger — Fjord Departure
Start: Geirangerfjord, UNESCO World Heritage Site
Geirangerfjord is Norway's most celebrated fjord — a narrow corridor of sheer rock walls with the Seven Sisters and Suitor waterfalls cascading from above. Begin the morning with a fjord cruise from the village dock; the perspective from the water looking back at the village and the Ørnesvingen hairpins above is unforgettable. Before leaving, drive the toll road up to Dalsnibba at 1,500 metres — on a clear day you can see the entire fjord system laid out below. The village itself has a handful of good cafes; Brasserie Posten on the waterfront is the best option for breakfast. Fill the tank here — fuel stations are sparse on the mountain roads ahead.
Aim to be on the water by 8:30 AM for the fjord cruise before the tour boats arrive. Dalsnibba opens at 9 AM and is best in early morning light.
Steep, dramatic hairpin climb from fjord level to Dalsnibba. Narrow in places — take your time and enjoy the views.
Trollstigen — The Troll's Path
Norway's Most Dramatic Mountain Pass
Trollstigen is Norway's most iconic road — eleven hairpin bends climbing an 858-metre mountain face beside the Stigfossen waterfall. The visitor centre at the top has a viewing platform directly above the falls; the view looking down the switchbacks with the waterfall thundering beside you is one of the great driving photographs in Europe. The road itself is narrow and steep — maximum gradient of 1:8 — and requires full concentration on the descent. Take the Ørnesvingen Eagle Road on the approach for the aerial view of the hairpins before you drive them. The road is typically open from May to October; check conditions before departing Geiranger.
Arrive at Trollstigen around noon. The visitor centre fills up by early afternoon. Allow 45 minutes at the top before the descent.
Eleven tight hairpins on a 1:8 gradient. Narrow single-lane sections with passing places. Demanding but manageable at careful pace.
