Black Mountain Pass & Brecon Beacons

The A4069 — Britain's most celebrated driving road, climbing through the wild heart of the Brecon Beacons.

2-3 Days 165 Miles 6 Rally Points Apr - Oct
L'Itinéraire

Black Mountain Pass & Brecon Beacons

The A4069 Black Mountain Pass is, by common consent, the finest driving road in Britain. It climbs from the Amman Valley through open moorland to a summit at 493 metres, where the road stretches ahead in a ribbon of perfect tarmac across the roof of Wales. Top Gear, Chris Harris, and every British motoring journalist has driven it. None has been disappointed.

But this route is more than one road. The Brecon Beacons — now the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park — contain a network of mountain roads that together form the best driving day in the UK. The Gospel Pass climbs to 549 metres through the Black Mountains. The A470 through the Storey Arms is a flowing valley road beneath Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain. And the waterfall country around Ystradfellte offers forest roads that twist through ancient woodland to hidden cascades.

The landscape is elemental: bare ridges, glacial cwms, red kite circling overhead, and sheep that regard your car with magnificent indifference. The weather is part of the experience — mist rolling across the summits, sudden shafts of sunlight illuminating a valley, rain that makes the tarmac gleam.

The food has improved beyond recognition in recent years. Welsh lamb, Brecon gin, artisan cheese from the Wye Valley, and craft beer from local microbreweries have transformed the region from a culinary desert into a genuine destination. And the accommodation — from converted barns to Georgian coaching inns — matches the quality of the driving.

""The Black Mountain Pass is the road that reminds you why you bought a sports car." — Chris Harris"

Llandovery

Gateway to the Black Mountain

Preview

Begin your epic journey in Llandovery, a historic market town nestled at the western gateway of the Brecon Beacons National Park. For centuries, Llandovery served as a vital drovers' halt, where vast herds of cattle rested before their arduous trek to London markets. This rich heritage is still palpable in its charming streets and independent shops. Before embarking on the legendary A4069, take time to explore the town. Visit the ruins of Llandovery Castle, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Tywi Valley, or delve into the local history at the Llandovery Museum. Fuel up with a hearty Welsh breakfast or grab a coffee at a local cafe, perhaps the West End Café, a popular spot for both locals and visitors. Ensure your tank is full, as the mountain roads ahead offer limited services. Llandovery provides the perfect blend of history, local charm, and practical amenities to prepare you for the exhilarating drive through the heart of Wales. The air here often carries the scent of damp earth and distant woodsmoke, a prelude to the wild beauty awaiting you.

Black Mountain Pass (A4069)

Britain's Finest Driving Road

Preview

The A4069, famously known as the Black Mountain Pass, is widely regarded as Britain's finest driving road, a ribbon of tarmac unfurling across the roof of Wales. From the Amman Valley, the road ascends dramatically through open moorland, a landscape sculpted by ancient glaciers and weathered by time. The ascent is a symphony of sweeping bends and exhilarating straights, culminating at a summit of 493 metres. Here, the views are breathtaking, stretching across vast expanses of heather and grass, often dotted with grazing sheep. The descent is equally magnificent, with long, flowing curves that reward precise driving and offer ever-changing vistas. On a clear day, the distant shimmer of the Bristol Channel can be seen. This road demands respect but offers immense rewards, a truly immersive driving experience where the raw beauty of the Brecon Beacons is your constant companion. Be prepared for sudden weather changes, as mist can roll in quickly, adding to the dramatic atmosphere.

Suggested Timing

Morning — 10:30am

Road Character

Open mountain road with sweeping bends and excellent visibility. Well-surfaced but watch for sheep, cyclists, and weather changes. The summit can be foggy even on fine days.
