Columbia Gorge & Cascade Volcanoes

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the great natural wonders of the American West. an 80-mile canyon where the Columbia River carved through the Cascade Range, creating a landscape of towering basalt cliffs, countless waterfalls, and a unique microclimate that makes Hood River the windsurfing and wine capital of the Pacific Northwest.

This route pack follows the Historic Columbia River Highway. America's first planned scenic road, designed by Samuel Lancaster in 1913 to reveal the gorge's beauty at every turn. The road features stone viaducts, arched bridges, and viewpoints engineered to frame specific waterfalls and cliff faces.

The pack extends south with a loop around Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest peak, on US 26 and OR 35. The combination of gorge waterfalls, Hood River wine tasting, and volcanic mountain scenery creates a remarkably diverse 2-3 day driving experience. all within 90 minutes of Portland.

"Samuel Lancaster designed the Historic Columbia River Highway not as a road, but as a poem written in stone and asphalt. A century later, every curve still rhymes."

Before You Go

Trip Planning Essentials

Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.

Fuel Stops

Fuel is readily available in Troutdale, Cascade Locks, and Hood River. However, there are no gas stations on the Historic Columbia River Highway itself, and services are limited on the Mt. Hood Loop. Fill up in Hood River before heading up the mountain.

Cell Coverage

Cell service is reliable along the I-84 corridor but can be spotty to non-existent on the Historic Columbia River Highway and on the more remote sections of the Mt. Hood Loop, especially on the east side. Download maps for offline use.

Advance Bookings

Reservations are highly recommended for dinner at Celilo Restaurant and for lodging at Timberline Lodge, especially during peak season. Many popular wineries also recommend booking tastings in advance.

Waterfall Parking

Parking at Multnomah Falls and other popular waterfalls is extremely limited and often requires a timed-use permit in the summer. Arrive early (before 9 AM) or consider using the Columbia Gorge Express shuttle from Portland or Hood River.

Historic Columbia River Highway

The Waterfall Corridor

Preview

Begin at the Vista House at Crown Point — a 1917 observatory perched 733 feet above the river with 30-mile views up and down the gorge. Continue east on the Historic Highway past Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the crown jewel — Multnomah Falls, a 620-foot double cascade that is the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest. The road itself is a masterpiece of engineering, with stone guardrails and arched bridges.

Suggested Timing

Depart by 8:30 AM for morning light on the cliffs and to find parking at the key waterfalls like Multnomah.

Road Character

A narrow, winding two-lane road with historic stone guardrails and arched bridges. The pavement is smooth but the road requires attentive driving due to tight curves and heavy tourist traffic, especially on weekends. Expect speed limits of 25-35 mph.

Cascade Locks to Hood River

The Transition

Preview

Continue east through the gorge, stopping at Cascade Locks for the Bridge of the Gods — a steel truss bridge crossing the Columbia into Washington. The landscape shifts from lush forest to drier, sunnier terrain as you approach Hood River. Watch for windsurfers and kitesurfers on the river — the gorge's unique wind patterns make this a world-class sailing destination.

Suggested Timing

Travel this segment late morning to enjoy the transition in scenery as the sun moves overhead.

Road Character

This section is primarily on Interstate 84, a modern, multi-lane highway with speeds of 65 mph. The road is straight and well-maintained, but can be subject to strong crosswinds. The approach to Hood River offers beautiful river views.

Pacific Northwest magic

We did this route in early autumn and the colours were spectacular. The mix of river gorge, mountain passes, and volcanic landscapes kept every day feeling fresh. The hot springs rally point was an unexpected treat.

Waterfalls and volcanoes

The Columbia River Gorge is stunning and the Cascade volcanoes are awe-inspiring. The Stable connected them with some incredible driving roads. The Historic Columbia River Highway section was a highlight — engineering marvel meets natural wonder.
