Utah Red Rock Grand Tour
Utah Highway 12 is frequently cited as the single best driving road in America, and this route pack builds a 4-5 day adventure around it. The route connects Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks through some of the most otherworldly terrain on earth. red-rock canyons, petrified forests, and the famous Hogback, where the road runs along a narrow ridge with sheer drop-offs on both sides.
But this pack goes beyond Byway 12. We extend south to Zion National Park via US 89 and SR 9, creating a Red Rock Grand Tour that takes in four of Utah's Mighty Five national parks. The geological diversity is staggering. from the white and orange hoodoos of Bryce Canyon to the soaring red walls of Zion, every mile reveals a new chapter in 200 million years of earth history.
The driving is engaging without being punishing. The roads are well-maintained and the curves are flowing, but the sheer scale of the landscape demands your attention. This is a route where you will stop constantly. not because you have to, but because you cannot help yourself.

Fuel Stops
Fuel is available in Torrey, Boulder, and Escalante. Be sure to have a full tank before leaving each town, as there are long stretches with no services, especially between Boulder and Escalante (over 60 miles).
Cell Coverage
Cell service is unreliable to non-existent in many areas, including large portions of Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and along Scenic Byway 12 between towns. Download offline maps and music before you go.
Advance Bookings
Reservations are essential for dinner at Hell's Backbone Grill (book weeks ahead) and highly recommended for Stone Hearth Grille. Lodging at The Lodge at Bryce Canyon and popular spots in Springdale should also be booked well in advance.
The Hogback
The 15-mile stretch of road known as 'The Hogback' between Escalante and Boulder has sheer drop-offs and no guardrails. It is fully paved but can be intimidating. Drive it during the day and in good weather for the best experience.
Zion Shuttle
For most of the year, access to Zion's main canyon is by a mandatory free shuttle. Park at the visitor center (arrive early, it fills up) or in Springdale and use the town shuttle to reach the park entrance. Check the NPS website for the current shuttle schedule.
Torrey & Capitol Reef
The Gateway
Begin in Torrey, a small desert town at the western entrance to Capitol Reef National Park. Drive the park's scenic road through the Waterpocket Fold — a 100-mile wrinkle in the earth's crust. Stop at the historic Fruita orchards where you can pick fruit in season, and drive the Capitol Gorge road to see 1,000-year-old petroglyphs.
Depart by 8:30 AM for morning light on the cliffs. Allow at least 4-5 hours to drive the scenic road, explore Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge, and see the petroglyphs.
The main Scenic Drive is a 7.9-mile paved road. The spur roads into Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge are graded dirt roads, passable for most passenger cars in good weather. Expect some washboard sections. The Capitol Gorge road is narrow with blind corners.
Highway 12: Torrey to Boulder
The Masterpiece
This is the heart of the route — the section of Highway 12 that makes driving enthusiasts weep. The road climbs over Boulder Mountain through aspen forests with views stretching 100 miles across the desert, then descends into the Escalante River canyon. Stop at the Calf Creek Recreation Area for a hike to the 126-foot Lower Calf Creek Falls.
Allow 3-4 hours for this 60-mile drive to fully appreciate the views. Start mid-morning from Torrey to have lunch in Boulder.
A masterpiece of highway engineering. Smooth asphalt with sweeping curves and significant elevation changes, climbing over 9,000 feet on Boulder Mountain. The road is well-maintained with guardrails in most critical sections. Expect slower traffic at viewpoints.

The American Southwest at its finest
We spent five days on this route and could have spent ten. The variety of landscapes — from red canyons to white salt flats to towering arches — is staggering. The roadbook's geological notes added wonderful context.
