Amalfi Coast & Sorrento Peninsula
Cliffside roads above the Tyrrhenian Sea, lemon groves, and the most beautiful coastline in the Mediterranean.
Amalfi Coast & Sorrento Peninsula
The Amalfi Coast road is one of the most photographed drives on Earth, and for good reason. The SS163 Amalfitana clings to vertical limestone cliffs, threading through tunnels carved from rock, past terraced lemon groves, and above a sea so blue it looks artificial. It is narrow, demanding, and utterly magnificent.
This route begins on the Sorrento Peninsula, where the Bay of Naples stretches toward Vesuvius and Capri floats on the horizon. From Sorrento, the road climbs over the spine of the peninsula to Positano — that impossible cascade of pastel houses tumbling to the sea. Then it's on to Amalfi itself, the medieval maritime republic, and finally to Ravello, the hilltop town of gardens and music that sits 350 metres above the coast.
Between the driving, there is limoncello, fresh-caught seafood, hand-stretched mozzarella, and espresso on sun-warmed terraces. This is Italy at its most intoxicating — a route where the journey is inseparable from the destination.

What You Get
Trip Planning Essentials
Route-specific logistics to help you plan ahead. Fuel stops, cell coverage, reservation requirements, and recommended apps for this drive.
Sorrento
Gateway to the Amalfi Coast
Begin in Sorrento, perched on cliffs above the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius smoking on the horizon. Wander the narrow lanes of the old town, sample limoncello at a family distillery, and watch the sun set over Capri from the Villa Comunale gardens. This is your base for acclimatising to the pace of southern Italian life.
Town driving. Narrow streets but manageable.
Positano
The Vertical Village
The drive from Sorrento to Positano crosses the spine of the peninsula via the Nastro Azzurro (Blue Ribbon) road, then descends in a series of tight switchbacks to the coast. Positano appears suddenly — a waterfall of terracotta, pink, and white cascading to a crescent beach. Park at the top and walk down through boutiques and bougainvillea.
Mountain crossing then steep coastal descent. Tight hairpins with oncoming traffic.
